Scots cricket players might be tempted to have a toke oi something strong and herbal beiore they play the most ieared cricket team in the world. The West Indies are like panthers, moving up on their prey beiore making a quick and incisive kill. There is no doubt that they are the most exciting team In the world and the Director oi Scottish cricket, Yorkshireman Jim Love, is relishing their third visit to Scotland.
‘It won’t be an easy game. They have some ilne players who are very exciting to watch and they play with such a passion; it really is enviable,’ says Love.
Love is certainly hoping that the West Indies will provide a carnival atmosphere ior the expected sell-out crowd oi 3500. He’s also hoping that the visitors’ sparkling play will inspire a iew more Scots to dream oi taking to the crease and belting out the runs. Although viewed as ephemeral, 12,000 people in Scotland thrill to the sound oi willow striking leather. This is a tiny number compared to the masses who ilock to iootball matches every Saturday but a sizeable minority nonetheless.
Love reckons that we are actually a lot better at the game then we give ourselves credit ior. Possibly our most iamous cricketing sons are Freuchie

who in 1985 won the British National Village Championship. Love’s higher aim though, is to see Scotland play in the World Cup beside the likes oi India 1 and Australia.

associate members oi the International Cricket Council and that means we play not against the proiessional test playing nations like England, but against other smaller nations like Holland and Kenya. We are quite near the top oi that list oi 22 and I would hope that we could qualify ior the next World Cup. We still have some work to do because even us playing the English Counties lust now is like Gala Fairydean playing Bangers.’
Extending the slmlle a little iurther, ior West Indies read Brazil. Surely they are going to wipe the iloor with us? love likes to hope otherwise: ‘0ur boys will be trying as best they can. We are looking ior a respectable scoreline which shows that we gave them a good contest. Can we win? It’s unlikely but it’s not unheard oi and anything is possible isn’t it?’ (Philip Dorward)
