Drive, Edinburgh. Free. The let Meadows Festival promises not one, but two stages for live entertainment. This year you can take your pick from the usual mix of local bands on stage one (see ilock listings) while stage two will host an lntemational ceilidh (Saturday) and various performance arts (Sunday). There will be a child- friendly area for you to leave the brats while you wander round looking for bargains on the stalls or remedies in the complementary medicine marquee. For older kids,
the fun fair will be in residence.

I HAWICK COMMOII IDIIIG Thurs 8-Sat 10. Hawick. Free. Commemoration of the young men of Hawick who fell on a band of English reivers camped at nearby Homshole after the battle of Flodden (where the majority of the town’s adult men were killed). The most spectacular ceremony takes place on Thursday 8 at 6pm with the colour bussing and comets
walk. I HISTORIC MOTORIIIG EXTRAVAGAIIZA Sun 4. 11am-5pm. Mellerstain House (on the A6089. 7m North of Kelso). £3.50 (£1.50). A must for any classic car fan. with some 300 pro-1964 cars. motorcycles and trade vehicles booked in and 33 one- make car clubs. Apart from an aerobatic display at 2pm. the entertainment is all vehicular, with an autojumble. several trade stands and a prize for the person arriving in the costume most appropriate to their transport. Ticket price includes entry to Mellerstain house. a fine Adam mansion completed in 1778. and its extensive grounds. I PHOTOGRAPHY II THE GARDEH Fri 9. 10am—4pm. Dawyck Botanic Garden. Stobo. I SHEEPDOG TRIALS Sat 3. 8am—5pm. Haylodge Park. Peebles (opposite the cemetary at the west end of town). Free. Serious stuff. with local. national and international competitors and their owners displaying their sheep-herding skills. ‘ Refreshments.

I THE FIGHTIIIG McClILLOCHS OF ICARDDIIESS Sun 11. 2.30pm. Cardoness Castle. 1m South of Gatehouse of Fleet on the A75. £1.20 (75p). The bloody history of the McCullochs as interpreted by the Carrick 800 Battle re-enactment society. The McCullochs were your archetypal ‘reivers who changed sides with the wind and gained possession of Cardoness in the 14th century by drowing the male owners and fforcing the widow to marry. The castle contains one of the best two-story 16th century prisons around. The afternoon will include a demonstration of ‘The Maiden’. Scotland's own medieval guillotine.

Amongst the attractions are comedy duo Bubbles and Squeak. the ever effervescent MacCumba with their afro- tinged Latin vibes and the mOre traditional sound of the Braemar Pipe Band and Dancers. Crowning of the Fair Queen at 2pm.

Besides housing the old Edinburgh Wax Museum with its Madame Tussaud quality waxworks. this is a working estate and deer farm. employing an integrated agricultural and environmental land-use strategy. The licenced restaurant uses Estate-reared meat and there is an extensive kids play area.
