INDEX FILM
I 101 Dalmatians (U) (Wolfgang Reitherman/Hamilton S. Luske/Clyde Geroninri. US. 1961) 80mins. Disney's Easter ‘95 release is a personal favourite. Dad Dalmatian Pongo and various animal chums help rescue his offspring from a terrible fate as the intended coat of Cruella De Vil. Plenty of fun. acres of cuteness. and the best villainess in animation history. General release. I Outbreak (15) (Wolfgang Petersen. US. 1995) Drrstirr lloffrrran. Rene Russo. Morgan Freeman. 122 rrrins. A deadly virus transfers from the African jungles to California and. in a terrifyineg short space of time. is threatening the entire world. Petersen's AIDS paranoia thriller starts out well enough. building on very real fears. but it does descend into a hardware shoot-'em-up. Okay as a slab of errtertainrrrent. but it fails to tap the potential of its subject matter. General release. I Poetic Justice ( 15) (John Singleton. ('8. 1994) Janet Jackson. Tupac Shakur. Tyra Ferrell. 109 mins. Justice (Jackson) and Lucky (Shakur) are soul survivors of the ghetto who take a road trip round California and discover a black identity. Singleton's remarkably uncynical followup to Boy: N The HUM] has a romantic structure that adds too much sugar to the spice. although Maya Angelou's poetry. spoken by Jackson. is indeed beautiful. lidinburgh: ['(‘L I The Poseidon Adventure (PG) (Ronald Neame. 178. 1972) (ieue llackman. Ernest Borgnine. Shelley Winters. 117 mins. Ah. the great days of the 7(1s disaster movie. llrrs is one of the best. with the Rev llacktnart leading survivors through a maze of dangerous corridors to safety when the ship they‘re travelling in is overturned. Play the guessing game and see w 110‘” cop it next. Edinburgh: Filmhousc. I Pret‘a-Porter ( 18) (Robert Altman. 1's. 1994) Tim Robbins. Julie Roberts. Richard E. Grant. Lacking the insider bite of The Player and the skilful narrative weaving of Short Cuts. this backstage glimpse into the world of high fashion will disappoint Altman fans. However. as a fast- paced farce. set during the annual Parisian catwalk show and starring names as diverse as Sophia Loren and Kim Basinger. Naomi Campbell and Tim Robbins. it might make for a colourful. glossy night out. Edinburgh: Cameo. Strathclyde: East Kilbride Arts Centre. I Pulp Fiction (18) (Quentin Tarantino. US. 1994) John Travolta. Samuel Jackson. Lima Thurman. Bruce Willis. 150 mins. Much more ambitious than Resen'oir Dogs. the most awaited second feature of the 90s has many scenes that crackle with Tarantino wit. and a few others that fall flat as the writer-director bravely experiments. Interlocking stories in the pulp crime manner concern hitrnen. ailing boxers. gang bosses and their molls. drug fiends. and assorted riff-r'aff. A trip. all the way. General release. I Quiz Show ( 15) (Robert Redford. US. 1994) Ralph Fiennes. John Turturro. Rob Morrow. 133 mins. When television was in its intimacy and America itself was riding on a wave of post- war/pre-Kenncdy innocence. the disclosure of cheating on the game show Twenty One caused a national scandal and sense of shock. Redford sets up the inevitable collision of ethics and glamour. morality and profit. while Ralph Fiennes. John Turturro. Rob Morrow and Paul Schofield acquit themselves with style. Edinburgh: Cameo. I La Reine Margot (18) (Patrice Chereau. France. 1994)1sabelle Adjani. Daniel Arrteuil. Jean-Hughes Anglade. 145 mins. A forced wedding between the Protestant Henri de Navarre and the Catholic Marguerite dc Valois can't calm 16th century France's religious wars or stop the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre. Chereau‘s breathtaking epic is perhaps a tad gory for the costume drama crowd. btit it's a subtitled spectacle that is remarkable in its scope. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Reservoir Dogs ( 18) (Quentin Tarantino. US. 1992) Harvey Keitel. Tim Roth. Michael Madsen. 100 mins. A gang of hoods. known only to each other by colour-coded nicknames. meets at an abandoned warehouse to figure how out their rigorously planned heist went so drastically wrong. The best debut in years from writer-director Tarantino. whose stylish violence seduces the audience into complicity. Brilliant in every sense of the word. Glasgow: Grosvenor. Odeon. Edinburgh: Cameo. Odeon. Strathclyde: Kelbume. I lllchle Rich (PG) (Donald Petrie. US. 1995) Macaulay Culkin. Jonathan Hyde. John Larroquette. 95 mins. The world's wealthiest child played by the world's wealthiest child actor — this comic strip turned movie has enough knockabout mayhem to keep the kids happy. Culkin is nrore confident and appealing than in his some of his other work. but it's Hyde's sarcastic butler who brings a better comic touch to the proceedings. See review. General release. I The Road To Wellvllle (18) (Alan Parker. US. 1994) Anthony Hopkins. Matthew Broderick.
Bridget Fonda. 120 mins. Comflakes will never taste the same again after you‘ve spent some time with their eccentric inventor. Dr John Harvey Kellogg. at his Battle Creek Sanitarium at the beginning of the century. An evangelical vegetarian. played to mad comic perfection by Hopkins. he sets orrt an exhausting regime of meals. massages and enemas for his guests. Fine scatalogical humour and ensemble playing. Fife: New Picture House.
I Rob Roy (15) (Michael Caton-Jones. lJS/UK. 1995) Liam Neeson. Jessica Lange. Tim Roth. 130 mins. When he is betrayed by the Marquis of Montr'ose (John lltrrt) and a maliciously psychopathic Englishman (Roth). Rob Roy MacGregor is determined to win back the honour of his name. Alan Sharp's script is rich. witty and literate; (‘aton-Jones’s direction injects a little action. brrt doesn't pander to Hollywood; and all the performances are wonderful. A stirring epic which refuses to compromise. making it one of the best films about Scotland and the Scottish psyche ever rrrade. See review. General release.
I Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book (PG) (Stephen Sornmers. US. 1994) Jason Scott Lee. Lena Headey. Sam Neill. 112 rrrirrs. Disney‘s new live action version of Kipling's well-loved stories doesn‘t have the appealing talking animals or songs of the 1967 animated version. but it‘s a great matinee-style wheeze — imagine an early Tarzan movie crossed with an Indiana Jones adventure. Jungle boy Mowgli meets tip again with the British anny regiment for whom his father was a gttide. but finds himself forced to reveal to a group of soldier cads the whereabouts of some hidden treasure. Great fun. Glasgow: Cannon. Edinburgh: UCl. Strathclyde: L'Cl East Kilbride.
I Saturday Night Fever ( 18) (John Badham. US. 1977) John Travolta. Karen Lynn Gomey. Julie Bovasso. 119 mins. Remember the Bee Gees music. the white suits. the days when Travolta was a promising young talent“? Nostalgia ntles again with the revival of this rather ordinary teen rebellion/dance mini-classic in which an ordinary working-class youth finds the only meaning in his life during his energetic peregrinations on the weekend dance floor. Edinburgh: Cameo. Central: MacRobert.
I Schindler's list ( 15) (Steven Spielberg. US. 1993) Liam Neeson. Ralph Fiennes. Ben Kingsley. 195 mins. During WW2. German industrialist and Nazi Party member Oskar Schindler saved the lives of over a thousand Jewish employees by demanding they work in his factory rather than be sent to Auschwitz. Spielberg's magnificent movie and Neeson's performance capture this enigmatic brand of heroism. while depicting traumatic events in documentary-like black-and-white images. Psychologically complex. emotionally devastating and artistically impeachable. this is one of the best films ever nrade. Strathclyde: Odeon Ayr.
I SFVI (18) (Jefery Levy. US. 1994) Stephen Dorff. Reese Witherspoon. Noseworthy. 96 mins. Held hostage in a convenience store by terrorists. Cliff Spab (Dorff) emerges to become an unwilling celebrity unable to cope with his newly found fame. llistrionic performances and over-emphatic direction turn an interesting idea (with a scorching soundtrack) into superficial 90s nihilism for spiritually blank Generation Xers who deserve better. Edinburgh: UCl.
I Shallow Grave (18) (Danny Boyle. UK. 1994) Kerry Fox. Ewan McGregor. Christopher Eccleston. 90 mins. Three Edinburgh flatmates find their new co-habitant dead with a stack of money under his bed. so after performing a little DlY on the corpse. they reckon all their worries are over. But the cops are closing in. there are two thugs after the money. and the psychological tension is beginning to show. Filled with dark humour and cynical one-liners. this Scottish thriller is bloody and intelligent enough to please the cult audience while remaining accessible enough to be a mainstream hit. Glasgow: MGM Parkhead. Odeon. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I The Silences 01 The Palace (15) (Moufida Tlatli. Tunisia/France. 1994) 127 mins. A young woman retums to the palace where she was born and. in a series of flashbacks. relives her upbringing in pre-independence Tunisia. Female director Moufida Tlatli constructs a complex view of a repressive regime. where intricate rituals reduce women to objects for the pleasure of the princes. Glasgow: GFI‘.
I Sirens (15) (John Duigan. Aus. 1994) Hugh Grant. Tara Fitzgerald. Sam Neill. Elle MacPherson. 94 mins. Christian morality meets bohemian expression. English prissiness meets Australian freedom. as a newly arrived English curate and his wife visit the home of ‘scandalous' painter Norman Lindsay. Hugh Grant is his bumbling screen self. Tara Fitzgerald perches on the edge of a sexual chasm as his wife. supermodel Elle MacPherson brings an easy. unselfconscious sexuality to it all. Fairly dull. really. but the nude tableaux add visual
appeal. We may not know much about art. but we know what we like. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Slacker (15) (Richard Linklater. US. 1991) Over 100 Texans. 97 mins. Urrclassifiable piece of independent American rnoviernaking which doesn't have a plot as such: instead it provides a snapshot of over 100 ‘slackers' - young. happy- go-lucky drifters — as they get through their daily lives. Structured as a monumental relay (each character briefly appears. meets the next. and so on). it has a loose. experimental. almostjazzy format that you‘ll either love or hate. A sure-fire cult hit. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Speed (15) (Jan De Bont. US. 1994) Keantr Reeves. Dennis Hopper. Sandra Bullock. 115 mins. A white-knuckle adrenalin ride that is the fastest. most finely tuned fairground attraction of the year. With LA SWAT man Jack Traven (Reeves) up against triad bomber Howard Payne (Hopper) in a tower-block elevator siege. a bus wired to blow if it drops below 50mph and LA’s as-yet-unfinished subway. this is a movie that will leave you on a high for days afterwards. Strathclyde: UCl East Kilbride.
I Star Trek Generations (PG) (David Carson. US. 1994) Patrick Stewart. William Shatner. Malcolm McDowell. l 17 mins. A contrived plot brings together Captains Picard and Kirk in Order to save millions of lives at the hands of the demented McDowell. Forget the time warp tosh and cringing references to the joys of the family: enjoy instead the self-referential jokes of the seventh Trekkie movie which clearly shows that the Next Generation crowd make for better sci-fi than the original pantomime team. And the effects are indeed spectacular. Glasgow: Odeon. I Stargate (PG) (Roland Emmerich. US. 1994) Kurt Russell. James Spader. Jaye Davidson. 122 rrrins. Was Earth visited centuries ago by aliens. Seems like it. particularly when Egyptologist Spader solves the key to a huge engraved circle found at the pyramids and unlocks a doorway to another planet. Along with a military team led by Russell. he encounters totalitarian space god Ra (Davidson) and reverses US foreign policy by helping the locals. Big budget science fiction with gleefully ridiculous story and brilliant effects. Edinburgh: MGM.
I Strawberry And Chocolate (15 ) (Tomas Gutierrez Alea/Juan Carlos Tabio. Cuba/ Mexico/Spain. 1993) Jorge Perugorria, Vladimir Cruz. Mirta lbarra. 110 mins. A straight Cuban sociology student becomes the object of affection for a older gay man. As their platonic friendship develops. they find themselves under pressure from the attitudes of other friends and from the political regime. What begins — deliberately — in stereotypical fashion soon transcends sexual and social boundaries and assumptions. Strathclyde: East Kilbride Arts Centre.
I Streetlighter ( l 2) (Steven E. De Souza. US. 1995) Jean-Claude Van Damme. Raul Julia. Kylie Minogue. 100 mins. When a renegade warlord takes a group of aid workers hostage. Colonel Guile (Van Damme) heads a sqaud of multi-ethnic heroes who storn a hi-tech fortress to free them. The fact that the film suffers from a stop-start plot. too many heroes and virtually no suspense is fairly unsurprising. given that it‘s a transfer to the big screen of a computer game. A noisy. brainless mess. See review. General release.
I Suture (18) (Scott McGehee and David Siegel. US. l994)1)ennis llaysbert. Michael Harris. Mel Harris. 96 rrrins. The story: Clay (llaysbert) survives a murder attempt by his brother Vincent (Han‘is). bttt suffers amnesia and has his face remade as Vincent by plastic surgery. The twist: although on screen everyone refers to the brothers' striking similarities. one is played by a burly black actor. the other by a small. white gtry. An intriguing examination of personal identity and the connection between looks and character. shot in glorious monochrome scope. Central: MacRobert.
I Tiger Bay (PG) (J. Lee Thompson. UK. 1959) Hayley Mills. John Mills. Horst Buchholz. 105 rrrins. A young girl witnesses a Polish seaman killing his two-timing girlfriend. is kidnapped by him. but still takes his side and helps him evade the police. A tight. well-acted thriller which marked a strong debut for Hayley Mills. who will be interviewed on stage after this screening. I Tom And V11! (15) (Brian Gilbert. US/UK. 1993) Willem Dafoe. Miranda Richardson. Rosemary Harris. 125 mins. Not the rrrost favourable portrait of the author of The Wasteland. as the film centres on Eliot's role in the unnecessary committal of his wife in a mental asylum. However. the dialogue is stilted. the direction flat and Dafoe gives an uncharacteristically poor performance. Richardson. however. is more powerful in another of the ‘slightly mad' roles she has rrrade her own. Glasgow: MGM Parkhead.
I Vanya 0n 42nd Street (U) (Louis Malle. US. 1994) Wallace Shawn. Julianne Moore. Andre Gregory. 119 mins. Over a period of four years. stage director Andre Gregory worked with a
group of actors for irregular ‘undress rehearsal‘ run-throughs of David Mamet's adaptation of Chekhov‘s Uncle l’anya. Malle's film version is equally experimental: the camera moves in close as the lines are delivered in a naturalistic manner without props or costumes. Untimately. however. the irrrpeccible performances and Chekhov's drama win the day. resulting in a good film. but excellent lhealtc Fife: Adam Smith.
I Welcome To The Terrordome (18) (Ngozi Onwurah. UK. 19:14) Saffron Burrows. Suzette Llewellyn. Felix Joseph. 94 rrrins. A sharnbolic attempt at a political future-shock thriller. ()nwurah's mix of interracial tension and lovesick melodrama is set in a bleak near- apartheid in the next century. The acting is wocxlen. the design school-play standard. See review. Edinburgh: Filrrrhouse.
