Edinburgh 5)

l Hank Wangford and The Lost Cowboys Southside Centre. Nicolson Street. Info 220 ()()()l. 8.30pm. £7 (£5). Hank Wangford knows the real roots and pttrpose of country music as well as anybody. even if he can't then resist taking the mickey out of most of it. The Greatest Living linglish Cowboy leads his now more acoustic band on a saunter through the by-ways of broken hearts. empty bottles. and pain. pain. pain (well. he is a doctor. after all). Support comes from Edinburgh-based band The Unfaithful Servants. who mix country with a shake of rhythm and blues.

I Steve Young Roman liagle Lodge. Johnston Terrace (opposite iinsign Ewart.

born. Alabama raised. Steve Young‘s gritty vocals and memorably perceptive songs have made him something of a cult figure with other songwriters as well as his loyal public. ()ne of the great undervalued names in American roots music. he treads the borderline between

country. rock. folk and blues. and is not to

be missed. Young also has a Mayfest date

I lligel Clark Quintet and flitin Sawney l’rio Queen's llall. Clerk Street. 668 201‘). s’._‘s()pm. £8. £6.50 (£4 on door). The last time I caught this excellent quintet. l was

, .1 little disappointed to hear them falling

into the very 70s jazz-rock cliches they

had previously avoided on a couple of the ,

faster tunes. A temporary aberration. hope. because this is a battd with a lot to offer when they set the controls away

from such we” explored territory and into i more distinctive regions of their own. The

other half of the double bill features the equally imaginative lndo-jazz fttsions of guitarist Nitin Sawney.

A samba party and tnore with the nineteen-piece student ensemble (coached by trumpeter J.
