I WOOOORAFT & FORESTRY FAIR Sat 29-Mon f, 11am-5pm. Kelburn Country Centre, South Offices, Fairlie, Ayrshire. 01475 568685. £3.50 (£2). Three days of displays, demonstrations and hands-on activities on a woody vein. Outdoor displays and demonstrations are sited all around the woodland of the Country Centre and include such arcane delights as snigging, felling and chainsaw sculpture. The Kelburn sawmill will be in operation and indoor demonstrations range from coopering and bodging to stick making, basket weaving and woodturning. Highlight of the fair is a first time appearance from the the acceptable lace of lumberiacking that is the Mid Wales Axe Racers. This six man team are led by the world intermediate underhand axe champion and will be providing an action packed show of chainsaw skills, high speed tree climbing, long saw cutting and axe and chainsaw racing. I BELTANE FIRE FESTIVAL Sun 30.
10.30pm—dawn. Calton Hill. Edinburgh. Free. but donations more than welcome. Bigger than ever before. this year's Beltane fire promises hundreds of performers. puppets. drummers. dancers. fire sculptures and installations with an expected audience of 5.000. Don’t forget to take warm clothing and something to warm up the inner body at this ancient ritual. Although the rituals finish at about midnight. that is when the real celebrations begin and continue through the night until the sun rises. The afternoon starts with a family sculpture day. followed by performances of dance. music and street theatre by schools and community groups. The climactic event is a massive procession through the park with music. lanterns and banners to a giant bonfire to symbolically banish winter and welcome spring as dusk falls.

A warm rain has been falling and that‘s not good for the skiers. They‘re piste off. to say the least. Although The Lecht and Glenshee are closed. the three remaining resorts reported good crowds over Faster with reasonable snow for the time of year. You will probably have to walk a bit to get to the whitish stuff. Providing the rain holds off the snow should hold out with skiable conditions to the end of April.
