HARD-MAN ARMAND
Hard house. Right now, it’s everywhere: in the sets of techno DJs, house DJs and garage DJs. Until late
I last year, however, when you thought
of hard house you thought of Chicago:
Relief, Radical Fear, Dancemania.
' Then suddenly New York slammed
back with Armand Van llelden’s Witchdoktor. Dark, menacing, percussive and totally dancefloor dominating, it updated the legacy of Todd Terry and hip house and in one fell swoop brought the new wave of flew York to the forefront.
Chatting from his flew York studio, 24-year-old Van Helden looks on it now as the natural next step. ‘In 1990,
91 and 92 I lived and breathed deep house,’ he says. ‘But now because of techno, rave, trance, progressive all those other elements it seemed natural to create a hybrid - why stay strictly house?’ Van llelden moved to New York from Boston in 1993. As a child he lived all over Europe, Holland and Italy and also Turkey. Unlike many more sceptical and purist US house producers, he openly admits a European influence.
‘The Good Men’s Giving It Up had a massive effect on me. To me it was a landmark record like Planet Rock,’ he says. British jungle has affected Van llelden too. Listen to the siren blaring,
