A more mature technique and experience is obvious when you hear Geordie Tom McConville‘s superb fiddle style and relaxed way with a song.

£7.50 (£6). Liam O’ Flynn is master of the uillean pipes. with a pedigree going back through Planxty and Seamus Ennis. Cordon Duncan is the cutting edge of imaginative technique on the Highland pipes. Alan MacDonald is the greatest exponent of traditional Gaelic music on the pipes. at the forefront of the movement to release the instrument from its military prison and let it sing again. Hamish Moore and Dick Lee famously enjoy marrying pipes of all sizes with reeds. recorder and whistle. Strathspeys on bass clarinet — lots of bendy notes!

I Rock, Salt and Halls and Seelyhoo Teviot House. Hall. 7.30pm. £6 (£5). Shetland bluegrass and beyond from one of the most admired young roots bands in Britain. RSN were a big hit last year. New band Seelyhoo features fiddle and guitar from the other northern archipelago of Orkney. with the superb Wrigley sisters in a bass. percussion. accordion and vocals line-up.
I Caelic Concert Teviot House. Park Room. 7.30pm. £6 (£5). The major song concert of the Festival features two of Gaeldom‘s greatest singers. in contrasting styles. From Lewis. lshbel MacAskill is a passionate. stylised artist. living the songs as she sings them. Flora MacHeili from Barra has a vast repertoire of rare and beautiful song. in the traditional idiom. Flora's daughter. clarsach player and singer Maggie Maclnnes also appears. and young Lewis piper and singer (and Mat'ltuir actress) Anna Murray. Performing and compering is admired singer and scholar Margaret Bennett.

I All-women bands are no longer a novelty, now not at all unusual in the folk scene. In fact women musicians are to the fore at this year’s event, with the Poozies’ high quaiity musicianship and flair for entertainment bringing the curtain down at the Oueen’s Hall closing
