I Shallow Grave ( 18) (Danny Boyle. UK. 1994) Kerry Fox. Ewan McGregor. Christopher Eccleston. 90mins. Three Edinburgh flatmates ﬁnd their new co-habitant dead with a stack of money under his bed. so after perfonning a little DIY on the corpse. they reckon all their wom'es are over. But the cops are closing in. there are two thugs after the tnoney. and the psychological tension is beginning to show. Filled with dark humour and cynical one-liners. this Scottish thriller is bloody and intelligent enough to please the cult audience while remaining accessible enough to be a mainstream hit. I The Shavlshanlt Redemption (15) (Frank Darabont. US. 1994) Tim Robbins. Morgan Freeman. Bob Gtrnton. 143 mins. Banged up for a crime he didn't commit (ain't they all?) quiet man Robbins plans a slow but effective revenge on the unnecessarily harsh prison regime. Freeman excels as the fellow con with an uncanny knack for procuring desired items. The ﬁlm is certainly overlong. but the apocryphal feel to the storytelling and the period detail are well handled in what is. ultimately. a very ﬁne movie indeed. Glasgow: Odeon. Edinburgh: Odeon. I The Silences or The Palace (15) (Mouﬁda T1atli.Tunisia/France. 1994) 127 mins. A young woman returns to the palace where she was born and. in a series of flashbacks. relives her upbringing in pie-independence Tunisia. Female director Mouﬁda Tlatli constructs a complex view of a repressive regime. where intricate rituals reduce women to objects for the pleasure of the princes. See preview. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I Silent Tongue ( 12) (Sam Shepard. US. 1992) Richard Harris. Alan Bates. River Phoenix. 106 mins. Harris is a grizzled frontiersrnan. who kidnaps Bates's half-breed daughter in order to calm his son (Phoenix). gone mad over his wife's death. By focusing on the supematural rather than gritty violence. writer-director Shepard brings a poetic. expressionistic vision to the western genre. The ﬁlm is at its most effective during the atmospheric Indian ghost story passages. but it is irrevocably damaged by acting that is. on the whole. terrible. See review. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I The Specialist (18) (Luis Llosa. US. 1994) Sylvester Stallone. Sharon Stone. James Woods. 110 mins. Crack explosives duo Stallone and Woods fall out when on the job. btrt soon ﬁnd themselves going head to head once more when Stallone is lured out of retirement to provide a few bombs for Stone's revenge plot on the killers of her parents. Frequent loud bangs can't fool us into believing this is value for money. nor can the steamy sex scenes hide the fact that

Forget the time warp tosh and cringing references to the joys of the family; enjoy instead the self-referential jokes of the seventh Trekkie movie which clearly shows that the Next Generation crowd make for better sci-ti than the original pantomime teatu.
