FILM INDEX

by Robert ((IIIIIUIUII‘II) Towne powers a magnificent outing by Nicholson that lies at the heart of this downbeat melodrama. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I Leon (18) (Luc Besson. France. I994) Jean Reno. Nathalie Ponman. Gary Oldman. ll0 mins. When his neighbour's family is wiped out by crooked cops on a bungled drugs bust. ice :ool hitman Leon finds himself looking after the sole survivor twelve-year-old Mathilde. Luc Besson's first film in English is. nevertheless. a French film in terms of style. editing and its boldness in story and theme. It's good to see that the director has finally got over the all-style-no- :ontent obstacle. Edinburgh: UCI. Strathclyde: Magnum.

I The lion King (PG) (Roger Allers/Rob Minkoff. US. I994) With the voices of Matthew Broderick. Jeremy Irons. Robert Guillaume. 88 mins. The first Disney animated feature to be based on an original story rather than a traditional folk or fairy tale. The Lion King retains all of the studios markers: impeccable animation. jolly songs. colourful characters and 1 strong moral guideline. Startling family fare. Strathclyde: WMR.

I little Rascals (PG) (Penelope Spheeris. US. I994) After Beverly Hillbillies. director Spheeris Joes another TV remake. this time going for a nunch of smug brats who leave a trail of .lestr'uction behind them. Evert kids who enjoyed

pieces are well realised. making this the most uncompromising studio horror film since Tire Shining. Glasgow: GET. Odeon.

I Invaders From Mars ( PG) (William Cameron Menzies. US. I953) Helena Caner. Arthur Franz. Leif Erickson. 82 mins. A young. smart American kid sees a flying saucer land in a nearby field. but nobody believes him . . . until his dad goes investigating and comes back a different person. Atmospheric 50s sci-fi that still stands up in narrative terms. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Invasion of The Body Snatchers ( t 8) (Phil Kaufman. US. I978) Donald Sutherland. Brooke Adams. Leonard Nimoy. “5 mins. This creditable remake of Don Siegel's archetypal exercise in .sci-fi paranoia turns away from the McCarthyite dread of its Fifties predecessor to concentrate on 70s lifestyle angst. but a host of knowing cameos and a welcome underabundance of special effects make it more than worth a look. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I Jaws (PG) (Steven Spielberg. US. I975) Roy Sclieider. Robert Shaw. Richard Dreyfuss. l25 mins. (‘r'acking shark adventure from the days

w hen Spielberg movies were scary. See the citizens of Amity scream! Watch the bodycount pile up! Hear the authorities declare the water perfectly safe! Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Johnny Suede ( l5) ('l’om DiCillo. US. 199]) Brad Pitt. Richard Boes. (‘atherine Keener. Nick (‘ave. 97 mins. Already a cult item on borne turf.

DiCillo's debut is a contemporary morality tale centririg on a would-be rockstar. whose musical and hairstyle inspiration is Ricky Nelson. Wryly funny look at an absurd world contains some excellent cameo perforrriances from Keener as his instructive girlfriend and Cave as a platinum ixrmpadourcd rocker. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I Just Cause ( l8) (Anr'e Glimcher. L75. I995) Sean Connery. Laurence Fishburne. Kate (‘apshaw l03 mins. A distinguished law lecturer (Connery) is tempted back into the front-line by racial injustice over an inmate on Death Row and. for a man of pensionable age. copes well with the subsequent chases. punch-ups and swamp alligators. Sean scowls and swears to prove he‘s earnest. lid Harris‘s clue-giving serial killer rips off Silence ()f The Lambs. and the whole thing turns into a thriller eager to borrow from just about everywhere. General release.

I The Last Detail ( l8) (Ilal Ashby. US. I973) Jack Nicholson. Otis Young. Randy Quaid. 104 mins. 'l'wo hardened naval petty officers escort a young recruit charged with theft across country to jail. Perceptive and profanity-filled screenplay

.he Home Alone level of mayhem might not take

.o the American sentiment here. General release. I little Women (U) (Gillian Armstrong. US.

I994) Winona Ryder. Susan Sarandon. Gabriel Byine. 118 mins. Louisa May Alcott's novel has :harmed readers for generations. despite weighing down its morals with a mountain of sentimentality. In Hollywood's third screen version. the March girls are still unbelievably

good and forgiving. but Armstrong and writer Robin Swicord have added a touch of 90s post-

feminism to give a contemporary relevence to

. their bonding and independence. A glowing view of family love. General release.

I The Madness 0f King George (PG) (Nicholas

' Hytner'. UK. I994) Nigel Hawthorne. Helen

Min‘en. Rupert Everett. ll0 mins. Alan

Bennett's adaption of his own stage play is a

great British film in its own right with no

lingering sense of theatrrcality. Nigel

Hawthorne's excellent portrayal of the King. his

demented behaviour threatening the stability of

the nation. gives the film an emotional core.

while the script's themes are intelligently

I Mama (l5) (Zhang Yuan. China. l99| ) 9() mins. Zhang‘s raw low-budget feature failed to leave anyone unmoved when it ran off with the lntemational Ci‘itics' Prize at the I992 Edinburgh Film Festival. It's a moving story of a mother's fight to raise her mentally handicapped son in modern China. despite the attitude of the authorities. A breakthrough piece for a new generation of filmmakers. Edinburgh: Filmhorrse.

I Mean Streets ( l8) (Martin Scorsese. I'S. I973) Harvey Keitel. Robert de Niro. David Proval. ll0 mins. Tony's Bar is the base for four young Italian-Americans. whose increasingly illegal activities lead to tragedy. Vividly observed character study which combines breathtaking technique with a pervasive sense of corruption. Keitel and de Niro give of their very best. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I Metropolis (PG) (Fritz Lang. Germany. I920) Brigitte Helm. Alfred Abel. Gustav Frolich. l24 miiis. ()ne of the greatest films of all time. here in its longer-length. uncolorrsed version. free from Giorgio Moroder"s tacked-on rock soundtrack. The cityscapes remain unsurpassed. although the allegory against totalitarianism is a bit naive. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I Mi Vida loea ( 15) (Allison Anders. (is. 1993) Angel Aviles. Seidy Lopez. Jacob Vargas. 92 mins. Anders. director of the excellent Gm Fowl bulging. literally gives a voice to the members of LA's Echo Park Latino gangs. ()verlapping story segments are played out on screen with occasional narration from different characters. changing perspectives on the same events. Some of the acting is pretty dodgy. the stories are familar from black urban movies and the dialogue is over-emphatic. but there's undoubtedly a strong current of energy propelling it along. Glasgow: GI'T.

I Natural Born Killers ( 18) (Oliver Stone. tfs. I994) Woody Harrelson. Juliette Lewis. Robert Downey Jr. ll9 mins. Stone's visual and aural assault makes for one of the most remarkable cinematic experiences in years: his attempts to many style with content. and provide a damning expose of the media adulation of serial killers is less successful. let down by his trademark overstatement. Violent. mesmerising. hallucinatory and bold in its use of various film formats. NBK is a landmark in MTV-influenced filmmaking. Glasgow: OdeOri. All U(‘ls.

I lie" (l2) (Michael Apted. US. I994) Jodie

Foster. Liam Neesori. Natasha Richardson. Isolated from the modern world for her entire life. Nell (Foster) must prove that she is capable of looking after herself in the wilds or she will be taken into care. The fact that she speaks only in a language all of her own doesn't help. but sympathetic doctor Neeson takes her side. Foster's stand-out performance is perhaps more theatrical than cinematic. but that doesn't hinder a film that avoids most of the patronising pitfalls it sets up. Iidinbiiigh: UCI.

I Nobody’s Fool ( l 5) (Robert Benton. US. I994) Paul Newman. Bruce Willis. Jessica Tandy. Ill) mins. In a performance to rank with his best. Paul Newman is a down-on-his-luck construction worker scraping a living in the wintry upstate New York town of North Bath. The more we see his destiny iritertwirie with those around him. the more weight and meaning cling to an apparently marginal existence. As subtle. humane. wise and witty a piece as has come out of Hollywood in many a long year. See review. Glasgow: ()deon. Edinburgh: Dominion. ()deori. [1(‘I.

I Noose (PG) (Edmond (ir'eville. UK. I948) Nigel Patrick. (‘arole Landis. Derek Fair. 98 mins. An Ariiericari-style thriller in which a female reporter uncovers the British fashion industry's links with black marketeets. Glasgow: (if-'I'.

I Nostradamus ( l5) (Roger Christian. Romania/I‘rance/(ier‘many. I994) Tcheky Karyo. Amanda Plumiiier'. Rutger llauer. ll9 mins. l(ith century visionary Nostradariius's gloomy predictions are put into a historical and personal context relating to plague. family deaths and the Inquisition. There is much to admire here. particularly Kar‘yo‘s restrained performance as the haunted seer. although llauer"s mad monk routine sounds an off-key note. Edinburgh: UCI. I Once Were Warriors ( I8) (Lee 'l'amahori. New Zealand. 1993) Rena Owen. 'I'eimuera Morrison. Mamaengaroa Kerr-Bell. 99 mins. 'I‘ariiahori's feature debut is a gritty Loach-style look at domestic violence and disenfi'arichisemerit within Auckland's Maori underclass. It's a film about survival of individuals. of families. and of race. It's also an uncompromisiug. shocking film that doesn't sensationalise its material. See preview. Glasgow: MGM Film ('eriti'e.
