I THE 1995 PUPPET AND ANIMATION FESTIVAL Various venues across Edinburgh, East
lothian, West lothian, Stirling and Clydesdale. Fri 24 Mar-Sat 15 April. Details from The Netherhow, Edinburgh, 556 9579/2647. Proving there’s more to puppets than just Punch and Judy on Blackpool beach, the annual Puppet Festival opens this month across the Central Belt with 32 companies giving 112 performances in 28 venues. From the traditional bamboo marionettes of Mme Souhani’s Chinese Whisper (pictured above) to the high-tech puppets used by The All Electric Puppet Theatre in Time Wizard the festival, now in its tweltth year, is a three-week long bonanza of puppetry in all its myriad forms. The animation side of things is beefed up this year with an extensive programme at the Macnobert Arts Centre in Stirling. Topping the bill is flick Park’s Oscar winning Wallace and Cromit and other Aardman gems (with special appearance by technical director Clen Hall); Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas and a range of topsy turvy fairy tales such as Derek ilayes hilarous animation Prince Cinders. And for those who’d rather make their own entertainment, workshops in the art of puppet-making and animation will be on hand. See the official Puppet Festival programme for details.
