The homo-erotic qualities of the original may be downplayed. btrt the morbid melancholy of 18th century New Orleans and the Grand Grrignol set- pieces are well realised. making this the most uncompromising studio horror film since The Shining. Enter her uncle. Albert Einstein (a brilliant comic caricature by Walter Matthau) who decides to experiment with sexual chemistry. An ace safe-cracker (Stoltz) arrives in Paris too carry out a ‘job' for a friend. but too much partying means that the elaborate bank siege is doomed to failure. Given that Quentin Tarantino's name is on the credits as executive producer. it's no surprise that the film is a mix of nihilistic attitudes and designer violence. linked in with a utbute to the heist pictures of past decades. US. 199-1) Jodie Foster. Liam Neeson. Natasha Richardson. Isolated from the modern world for her entire life. Nell (Foster) must prove that she is capable of looking after herself in the wilds or she will be taken into care. The fact that she speaks only in a language all of her own doesn't help. btrt syrupathetic doctor Neeson takes her side. Foster's stand-out performance is perhaps more theatrical than cinematic. but that doesn't hinder a film that avoids most of the patronising pitfalls it sets up. See feature. General release. Tomei‘s playing is agreeably ntrtty and [)owrtey's charm has its appeal. brrt there's no real sense that these crossed lovers deserve each other. making this a poor cousin to Sleep/err In Seattle. Child-nerd Richard Tyler (Ctrlkin) bumps his head in the local library and finds himself transported into an animated adventure with a trio of book friends - Adventure. Fantasy and Ilorror — to keep him company. The moral is that discovering a role for yourself in fiction helps you confront real life.
