A bizarre and disturbing "re/rage a tmis builds up in Argentina between roving card-sharp Ford and the couple (Hayworth and Macready) who own the casino where he finds himself. Plenty innuendo and sexual ambiguity. Glasgow: GFT.
I Go Fish (18) (Rose 'l'roche. US. 1993) Guinevere Tumer'. V.S. Brodie. Anastasia Sharp. 89 mins. Twentysomething would-be author Max is pushed by her wise owl flatmate towards vet's assistant Ely. btrt the two girls' shyness could prove an unassailable obstacle. Troche's film bustles with visual invention. deliciously catty dialogue and natural perfomtances. These are people. not issues. and even if Spike Lee was a romantic and a lesbian. he couldn’t make a movie as fresh. funny and openly entertaining as this. Glasgow: GFT. Central: MacRobert.
I Grease (PG) (Randal Kleiser. US. 1978) John Travolta. Stockard Channing. Olivia Newton John. 110 mins. The long-running broadway show arrives on screen dripping with Fifties' nostalgia. cheery tunes. a high camp value and the winsome channs of the plastic Newton-John and the toothy Travolta. A nice collection of old timers enhance the cast. Fife: New Picture House.
I Hallelujah. The Hills (15) (Adolfas Mekas. US. 1963) Peter H. Beard. Martin Greenbaum. Sheila Finn. 88 mins. An intriguing piece of early 60s American underground cinema which sends tip French New Wave stylistic techniques in a way that will certainly appeal to film buffs. The story (slight. it has to be said) concerns two men chasing after the same woman (a la Truffaut) except she's played by different actresses for summer and winter. At times. silly and cliched; at others. remarkably visual and inventive. Edinburgh: Film Guild.
I Heavenly Creatures ( 18) (Peter Jackson. New Zealand. 1994) Melanie Lynskey. Kate Winslet. Sarah Peirse. 98 mins. In 1952. New Zealand was shocked by the murder of Honora Parker by her teenage daughter and a schoolfr‘iend. Despite director Peter Jackson‘s back catalogue in slapstick gore — Brainrleml. 80¢! Taste — Heaven/y Creatures does not dwell on the more lurid details of the crime. Instead. it examines the imaginative fantasy worlds of the girls and the strength of their friendship in a sympathetic light. See preview. Edinburgh: Cameo.

Classic musical entcnainrnent from the MGM studios. in which a rich bitch plays hard to get with a string of suitors. The plot of Philadelphia Story goes out the window. btrt with stars like these. style is everything. Glasgow: GFT.
I The Honeymoon Killers ( 18) (Leonard Kastle. US. 1969) Shirley Stoler. Tony Lo Bianco. Mary Jane lligby. 108 mins. Surely one of the most unusual entries in the serial killer genre. An overweight nurse and her Latin gigolo btrrnp off a succession of spinsters and widows. Based on a true story and filmed in shady black and white. it is a bleak. but overlooked. oddity. I The Hudsuclter Proxy (PG) (Joel Coen. US. 1994) Tim Robbins. Jennifer Jason Leigh. Patrl Newman. 111 mins. When Hudsucker lndtrstries' boss takes a dive from an upper storey boardroom window. rnailroorn boy Norville Barnes (Robbins) finds himself catapulted to executive status. Btrt pretty soon he‘s forgotten his roots and is becoming as heartless as his manipulative mentor. played by Patrl Newman. A winning blend of 40s screwball comedy. 50s consumer quirks and satire on 80s corporate greed. the Coen brothers' latest is cinematic fantasy in its purest form. Edinbtrrgh: Cameo.
I Interview With The Vampire ( 18) (Neil Jordan. US. 1994) Tom Cruise. Brad Pitt. Christian Slater. 122 mins. More faithful to Anne Rice's book than anyone had any right to expect. Jordan's blood-soaked movie never shies from the more gruesome aspects of varnpirisrn. The homo-erotic qualities of the original may be downplayed. btrt the morbid melancholy of 18th century New Orleans and the Grand Guignol set- pieces are well realised. making this the most uncompromising studio horror film since The Shining. New York cop Cage hasn't enough change to tip waitress Fonda. so he promises to split his winnings if his lottery ticket comes up . . . and it does. But wife Perez doesn't think that honesty is the best policy. Having junked its working tit1c(Cop Git-e Waitress $2 Million Tip) for a snappier wish-fulfilment moniker. this warm-hearted
comedy is the best adult fairytale since Sleepless In Seattle. Strathclyde: Magnum.

All the markers of a 40sflhn noir are set against the bright. neon-washed landscapes of 80s Nevada. as Whalley-Kilmer fakes her death to escape the clutches of her ex-boyfriend and the mafia. both of whom lay claim to the suitcase of money that is her favourite possession. No classic. but a passable double-cross special that should keep crime thriller addicts more than amused. Glasgow: GFT.

the natives on the island wanted to keep Kong at bay with a giant wall. did they build a door in it

I ladyblrd. Ladybird (18) (Ken Leach. UK. 1994) Crissy Rock. Vladimir Vega. Sandie Lavelle. 101 mins. Loach's latest hard-hitting socio-political drama tells the story of 'Maggie'. a woman with a history of relationships with violent men. who has her four children taken from her when she refuses to co-operate with Social Services. A new liaison with a gentle South American exile only catrses new traumas. Loach pushes our sympathies to the side of the
underdogs rather than the social workers who are ; ; also victims of a heartless system. Extremely ' ‘ harrowing. btrt a vital catalyst to debate. Central:

French film in terms of style. editing and its
2 boldness in story and theme. It’s good to see that

based on an original story rather than a traditional folk or fairy tale. The Lion King
retains all of the studios markers: impeccable
animation. jolly songs. colourful characters and a strong moral guideline. Startling fatnin fare.

Ambitious medical student Victor Frankenstein discovers the means of regenerating dead tissue. btrt so honified is he with his success that he abandons his creation - bringing a terrible revenge upon his friends and family. Keeping close to Mary Shelley's book. Branagh departs from it only to clarify and expand upon her aims. The scope is immense. the themes deep and literate. the acting and design first class. Strathclyde: Magnum.
I The Mask (PG) (Charles Russell. US. 1994) Jim Carrey. Cameron Diaz. Peter Reigen. 95 mins. A timid bank clerk finds an ancient mask that allows him to fulfil his innermost desires as a suave charmer and crime-fighting whirlwind. An amalgam of 20s. 30s and 40s decor. The Mask has a skimpy plot. btrt its rousing musical set-pieces and eye-popping computer-generated effects (like a live action Tex Avery cartoon) made it the surprise hit of the summer.
