MO’ TUCKER
: I’ve been told to be firm with Barbara é Tucker, not to let her talk too much or put me on hold continuously, but the
dance music diva knows exactly what she’s doing. Best known over here for her two gospel-tinged house tracks ‘I Get Lifted’ and ‘Beautiful People’, she is much more than the vocal front to some backroom boys. From writing her own work, choreographing, acting and club promoting, Tucker is at the very heart of the American club scene. Her Wednesday night Underground Network at the Sound Factory is where the New York high-life clubbers go to start their weekend. The legendary Little Louie Vega is the resident DJ, Tucker choreographs the Underground
1 Network Dancers and David Cole from { Civilles and Cole can often be heard I jamming live on keyboards.
She’s been on the dance scene for a long time and feels that now is the moment to become the consummate performer. To the long list of job titles on the Tucker CV now add label boss.
Rather than a vehicle for her own

exposure, Tucker’s primary objective
; for Undeground Network Records is to ' bring to the attention of the world people like Terry Wright, singer with
the Harlem Boys Choir and Don Welch, co-promoter of clubs and ‘one of the most versatile N8 in New York’.
She’s sure that with people like this the exemplary record of success she’s achieved will continue. Although she has received many awards, Tucker feels that such symbols of conspicuous adulation are not what she is about. ‘Awards mean nothing to me,’ says Tucker. ‘Jesus means a whole lot more.’ The daughter and granddaughter of ministers, she sees no conflict between her beliefs and
1 the hedonistic world she inhabits. ‘I
don’t indulge in unnecessary stuff like getting high or carrying on unseemly. I don’t judge anybody and I ask not to
. be judged. I’m just trying to do the ’. best I can.’ (Rory Weller)
