George Morel: egalitarian house master
George Morel is slamming the spirit of disco onto 90s dancefloors. Like Pierre and Armand Van llelden, he’s revising the New York house sound, refining it into more minimal territories where soulful vocal i mantras and cavernous basslines co- exist. This is the hard, tribal hypnotism of ' trance crossed with the expressive ' vocals and deep groove of soul and house. Morel’s skills run beyond 1 production, evident on killer cuts like ‘80 Deep 80 Good’ and the ‘Morel’s
Grooves’ series. The 27-year-old Puerto llican finds himself wing in Europe almost every weekend and runs his own label Groove 0n, releasing cuts of futuristic funk by the likes of Felix Ila Housecat and Dundee outfit Trench. lie is currently working on an album . that should ensure his recognition beyond the more selective dancefloors. ‘lt’ll be energetic, ' uplifting house music,’ he says, during a rare break from the studio. ‘lt’ll be like ‘Morel’s Grooves’, but with more : vocals. I’m doing some tracks with Ce i Ce Rogers [who was behind the ; towering house anthem ‘Someday’]. I ; think it’ll be quite an accessible, pop ‘ type album, while hopefully maintaining an underground edge.’ It’s comes as no suprise that Morel’s inspiration derives mainly from the heady days of 70s dance floor 2 ltedonism. He grew up in Puerto Rico, ? 'Iistening to Donna Summer, stuff like 3 that’ and moved to New York at the . age of twelve, wing at house parties g soon after. Fifteen years on, Morel is i one of Strictly Rhythm’s major producers, with a refreshingly egalitarian view or the way house, like disco, is now a universal sound. ‘l’m very pleased with the way house music is progressing,’ he says. ‘lt’s a lot more commercial and it’s getting a lot more radio play.’ Expect to see this inspired pragmatist achieve the same sort of crossover success as Eric ‘Reel j 2 Beal’ Morillo.
