REARRANGING THE LEGACY OF HOUSE
Satoshi Tomiie
When the Def Mix tour comes up to Scotland there will be one name in the trio of DJs playing, more unfamiliar than the others. It’s obviously not Frankie Knuckles, the godfather of house responsible for the way much early house music evolved. llor is it David Morales, a name record company executives bank on to shift an extra 100,000 units, solely due to his remix credit. The other name playing alongside these two gods of house is one whose work to date suggests such eminence is imminent: key member of the Def Mix team, Satoshi Tomiie.
The exceptional arranger, producer and remixer originally from Tokyo was wooed to New York in the late 80s by Knuckles after they worked on an advertising project together. Tomiie was already aware of Knuckles’ legacy, constantly seeing the name on the production details of records he
was buying for his American house orientated club nights in Tokyo. His passion for house music, though, came relatively late. When Knuckles was mixing up Philadelphia soul in the delivery room of house (Chicago), a thirteen-year-old Tomiie was investigating music for the first time, initially within the structured world of classical music and later exploring jazz.
Tomeii senses this early training sets him apart from others in the club industry, but sometimes in the wrong way. ‘Most DJs and people who perform in clubs don’t really know how to play,’ he says. ‘lt’s good to have a musician’s ear, but sometimes knowing bothers you. You can know
. too much. I have to hold myself back.’
like so many other DJ/producers facing the same frustration, Tomeii seeks musical release through his own compositions. Unlike that of a great
number of these limelight wannabes,
his own work is damned good. The problem is grabbing the moments to
i do it in. ‘iiemixes are not your own -
they are for someone else,’ he says. ‘It’s hard to find time to do my own work. Sometimes though a track
? comes into my head in 10 minutes, but
then it’s the production that takes the time.’ You’re inclined to wonder why, if he’s
a so strapped for time, he will be in
Scotland DJing to us? We’ve only got his reputation to go by, regarding his
? skills on the decks, but if it’s as good
as his studio work then we might iust let him off with these few nights away. (Rory Weller)
Satoshi Tomiie will be playing the Def Mix tour in Edinburgh on Sat 19 llov at the Vaults, and in Glasgow on Fri 18 Nov at the Voodoo Room.
