F000 MIXER
It could easily have been so very different. Instead of having a fairly hefty part in shaping the music we listen to today, the dance world might have lost Paul Oakenfold among the steaming pots in the kitchens of his first chosen trade, cookery.
Today though, he’s a M, an A&R man and a producer. A compilation of his remixes comes out at the end of the month and he’s formed a new band called Rise.
Being on the other side of the mixing desk with the band has made Paul more appreciative of the work he and his remixing partner Steve Osbourne (jointly known as Perfecto) are invited to play around with. ‘You have to take your hats off to these people,’ he says. ‘lt’s very, very hard to write songs.’

adds gets the perspiration going on the dance floor, it’s that 10 per cent inspiration that shines out from the original tracks. With his own band this inspiration bit hasn’t sparked. When you listen to tracks like the Perfecto mix of 02’s ‘Even Better Than The Real Thing' or Massive Attack’s “Unfinished Sympathy’ though, it’s nothing short of the full 100 per cent.
