5 After disappearing into the wilderness for the past few years, snowed under
in a deluge of stripped bare four-four, i breakbeats are back in fashion. Of
1 course, in hip hop, the characteristic
g syncopated drum loop never went
1 away. But now more than ever, breaks i are back. Back in the splintered, intricate drum ’n’ bass of jungle. Back T in the tranquil, ambient grooves of Mo ‘ Wax. Back on house dancefloors thanks to X-Press 2 and hip house nostalgia. And perhaps, most suprisingly, in vogue on techno and trance-floors. You can thank The Dust Brothers for that.
Tom Bowlands and Ed Simons met in 1989, while studying history together at Manchester University. Sharing a love of hip hop, acid and funk they started DJing at underground bash llaked Under Leather, )arnmlng together the same eclectic mix of styles in their sets. They’re still spinning an inspired fusion at the weekly Heavenly Sunday Social spots.
‘At the moment we love mu-Ziq’s album, the new Depth Charge one and the Sonic Youth cover of The Carpenter’s Superstar,’ says Tom. The population of the club has overtaken both their expectations: ‘When we started it was just in the basement of a pub, 100 or so people would come

down. Then, on the third night, 400 or so people turned up. It’s becoming a bit of a hassle.’
On vinyl, The Dust Brothers have honed their broad taste into a dazzling synopsis. Song To The Siren, their first release, plunged This Mortal Coil’s original into a chasm of sub-bass, funked up beats and dark, acidic noise. 1994’s Fourteenth Century Sky and My Mercury Mouth EPs evolved a spectacular new partnership of technoid synths and reconstructed breakbeats.
llow, Tom and Ed are working on an album, due to be released in January: ‘We’ve done two vocal tracks with a singer-songwriter called Beth Orton,’ enthuses Tom. ‘She’s just done a track with lied Snapper, she’s like a female version of flick Brake.’ There’s also an unlikely, yet potentially electric, collaboration with Charlatans’ vocalist Tim Burgess.
