As hands-on exhibitions go, they don‘t come much more hands-on than this. But the Design Works exhibition isn’t simply aimed at giving parents a reprieve from a continuous loop of ‘Don't touch!’ More importantly with it provides nursery and primary school children. a unique opportunity to discover the principles behind the often over-hyped world of design. Throughout the five main sections of the exhibition, children are encouraged to work out for themselves basic questions such as why do buildings and bridges stand up? How do designers use colours and patterns in everyday objects, and to what purpose? Why is design so important in our daily lives? Under-fives have a special area where they can be constructively occupied while the rest of the family take in the rest of the exhibition. Under-fives aren’t simply relegated to building bricks: there’s even a computer work station with programmes specially
developed for them.
The City Art Centre’s keeper, lan Riordan, says he’s never had an exhibition quite so specific in its target age range. Fresh from a long spell in Birmingham, Design Works had been formulated with the English curriculum in mind, aiming at five—eight-year-olds. But its appeal is wider than that. The exhibition had been open for just one day, and already Riordan has noticed punters stay in the exhibition much longer than usual. ‘On Monday, for example, at about ten o‘clock, i noticed a family working on one of the computers in the gallery, and they were still there at one o’clock when 1 left for lunch. still absorbed.’ An exhibition that absorbs children for a whole morning?
