Another of this year's strong feature debuts. this energetic look at twentysomethings was shot by 25-year-old Frederic Jardin on the streets of Paris in a mere three weeks. inevitably. it's romance that is the primary concern amongst this hip ensemble. but Jardin's use of dialogue and locations is fresh and stylish. With L'Orange Amere (8 mins). Ilelas Pour Moi (18) (Jean-Luc Godard. France. 1993) Gerard Depardieu. Laurence Masliah. Bernard Verley. 85 mins. Two living legends of French cinema — Gerard Depardieu and Jean- Luc Godard - come together for this witty modern allegory based on the Greek tale of Alcmene and Amphitryon. Depardieu plays a God-like figure who discovers the joys and woes of human life in a small Swiss village. Godard. one eye always on politics. uses his material to make references to the current situation in Bosnia. With Arene (18 mins).

Jacqueline Bisset and Anouk Aimee. director Elie Chouraqui discovers deeper emotions running below the surface of an annual Christmas holiday enjoyed by a group of friends. Fine ensemble playing and precise characterations give the lightweight structure some depth. Matisse (15) (Mathieu Kassovitz. France. 1993) Julei Maudech. Hubert Kounde. Mathieu Kassovitz. 95 mins. The work of 26-year-old Kassovitz has been compared to Spike Lee and Woody Allen rather than any of his countrymen. This. his first feature. is a fast-paced interracial comedy which stars the writer-director as a Jewish bike courier who shares a West Indian girlfriend with an African law graduate. When she announces that she is pregnant. but isn't sure who the father is. any notions of animosity must be pushed to the side.

Two of the most popular French films on the arthouse circuit in recent years were Techine‘s J 'Embrasse Pas and Ma Saison Preferee. His latest work is a period coming-of-age piece. which brings a young Algerian to a boarding school in south-west France during the political turmoil of 1962. Tombes Du Ciel (18) (Philippe Lioret. France. 1993) Jean Rocllefort. Marisa Paredes. Ticky Holgado. 91 mins. Tali-like traveller Arturo (The Hairdresser 's Husband's Rochefort) stumbles from one disaster to another en route from Montreal to Paris over the New Year period. Award-winning comedy on the universal absurdity of bureaucracy. With La Vis (18 mins). I Getting Even With Bad (PG) (Howard Deulch. US. 1994) Macaulay Culkin. Ted Danson. Glenne Headley. 109 mins. Danson is a small- time crook doing one lastjob to help set him up in the straight world; Culkin is his estranged son who rumbles his dad's plan. takes the loot and blackmails him into doing the bonding good- time thing. A hotch-potch movie. stirring elements of caper. heist. romance and travelogue into something that is not the sum of its pans. The gags are set up well. but fall to the obvious at the punchline. I Go Fish (18) (Rose Troche. US. 1993) Guinevere Turner. V.S. Brodie. Anastasia Sharp. 89 mins. Twentysornething would-be author Max is pushed by her wise owl flatmate towards vet's assistant Ely. but the two girls' shyness could prove an unassailable obstacle. Troche's film bustles with visual invention. dellciously catty dialogue and natural performances. These are people. not issues. and even if Spike Lee was a romantic and a lesbian. he couldn't make a movie as fresh. funny and openly entertaining as

I Highlander (15) (Russell Mulcahy. UK. 1986) Christopher Lambert. Beatie Edney. Sean Connery. 111 mins. A handful of immortals battle through the centuries to win a mythical prize. A curious mixture of romance in 16th century heather and car chases in present day New York. the film is an inelegant. often ludicrous. but enjoyably daffy adventure. Lambert seems more at home with the contemporary passages and only the ever wonderful Connery has the requisite style for the kitsch Scottish scenes. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I "(18) (Lindsay Anderson. UK. 1968) Malcolm McDowell. David Wood. Richard Warwick. 111 mins. The kids are alright as anarchy and rebellion erupt with all the passion of an explosion at a stuffy English public school. Symbolic. allegorical stuff about the breakdown of society which didn‘t seem that far off twenty years ago. The final moment of machine-gun fire at prize day is not too dissimilar to contemporary events in Paris. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Jamon. Jamon (l8) (Bigas Luna. Spain. 1992) Penelope Cruz. Anna Galiena. Javier Bardern. 94 mins. ‘Jalnon' equals ham; ‘una mulierjamona‘ equals hot hispanic babe. Put them together and you've got this mix of reprehensible depravity and tease of social significance. As it tells of the desire of a pregnant woman for the bulgingly becrotched Manuel (with weightly subplots involving various mums). you can‘t help feeling it‘s aiming at too many targets. Sex. leering and exploitation. but not necessarily a fine film. Fife: New Picture House.
I Jurassic Park (PG) (Steven Spielberg. US. 1993) Sam Neill. Laura Dern. Jeff Goldblum. A group of scientists are invited to give their approval to a theme park filled with genetically engineered dinosaurs. but the giant reptiles are soon running amok. Unsurpassed computer effects ensure that the dinosaurs themselves are tenifyingly believable (moreso than the PG certificate would suggest). but by the halfway point. it's more or less a chase movie with superior technology. I Karla (Hemiann Zschoche. Gemlany. 1965/90) 128 mins. A young East German teacher's attempts to allow her pupils to think in more than slogans brings her into conflict with the authorities. The film was initially banned soon after it went into post-production. Glasgow: Goethe Institut.
I Ladybird. Ladybird (18) (Ken Loach. UK. 1994) Crissy Rock. Vladimir Vega. Sandie Lavelle. 101 mins. Loach‘s latest hard-hitting socio-political drama tells the story of ‘Maggie'. a woman with a history of relationships with violent men. who has her four children taken from her when she refuses to co-operate with Social Services. A new liaison with a gentle South American exile only causes new traumas. Loach pushes our sympathies to the side of the underdogs rather than the social workers who are also victims of a heartless system. Extremely harrowing. but a vital catalyst to debate. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I like Water For Chocolate (15) (Alfonso Arau. Mexico. 1991) Marco Leonardi. Lurni Cavazos. Regina Tome. 114 mins. At the end of the 19th century. Mexico is caught up in the Revolution. Against this backdrop. Laura Esquival's novel and this film adaptation by Arau depict one woman's struggle for freedom from tradition. A classy melodrama that Hits from comedy to tragedy to culinary excess. raising the new generation of Mexican filmnlaking talent to truly international levels. Glasgow: Grosvenor.
I The lion King (PG) (Roger Allers/Rob Minkoff. US. 1994) With the voices of Matthew Broderick. Jeremy Irons. Robert Guillaume. 88 mins. The first Disney animated feature to be based on an original story rather than a traditional folk or fairy tale. Tlle Lion King retains all of the studios markers: impeccable animation. jolly songs. colourful characters and a strong moral guideline. Startling family fare. General release.
I Love And Human Remains (t8) (Denys Arcand. Canada. 1994) Thomas Gibson. Ruth Marshall. Cameron Bancroft. 100 mins. Based on Brad Fraser's play. Arcand's latest grasps the original's any style of dialogue and twin narrative prongs of sexual uncertainty and ongoing serial killings. While the two plots may not always sit comfortably together. the thematic unity — of the dangers of love and turn-on of murder - is perfectly realised for a 90s audience. Sharp ensemble playing rounds off a clever and symbolic piece. Central: MacRobert.
I Major league 11 (PG) (David 5. Ward. US. 1994) Charlie Sheen. Tom Berenger. Corbin Bemsen. 105 mins. After their rags-to-riches talent turnaround. the Cleveland Indians baseball team again find themselves struggling before again finding inspiration. Alan Alda. 108 mins. When her elderly neighbour dies mysteriously and suddenly. Carol Lipton (Keaton) does some amateur sleuthing along with the New York literary set. Allen returns to the comic formula that first made his name - neat plot. snappy one-liners —- making thls a much more approachable and enjoyable experience than his more serious work of late. ! The Mask (PG) (Charles Russell. us. 1994) J lm Carrey. Cameron Diaz. Peter Reigert. 95 mins. A timid bank clerk finds an ancient mask that allows him to fulfil his innermost desires as a suave charmer and crime-fighting whirlwind. An amalgam of 20s. 305 and 40s decor. The Mask has a skimpy plot. but its rousing musical set-pleces and eye-popping computer-generated CffCClS (like a live action Tex Avery cartoon) make it the surprise hit of the summer. General release.
I Mina Tannenbaurn (12) (Martine Dtlgowson. France. 1994) Romane Bohringer. Elsa Zylberstein. Jean-Philippe Ecoffey. 128 mins. An aspiring painter and a shallow media wannabe remain together through childhood. the romantic yearnings of adolescence. bllt are tested by adulthood‘s pressures. Bohringer and Zylberstein work wonders in the central roles. while Dugowson's revelation of buried truths will shake you to your core. Perceptive. stylish and wise. See review. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Monkey Trouble (U) (Franco Amurn'. US. 1994) Thora Birch. Harvey Keitel. Mimi Rogers. 96mins. Birch is a weeny with family trouble. who happens on a rogue capuchin monkey as a pet. Problem is. it's a trained thief belonging to strange-accented European gypsy Keitel. Unimaginative. sentimental tale with an insufferable Hollywood mix of group hugs and cute furballs. I Mrs Doubttire (PG) (Chris Columbus. US. 1993) Robin Williams. Sally Field. Pierce Brosnan. 125 mins. Separated from his wife and kids. out-of-work voice actor Daniel Hillard (Williams) dons make-up and body-padding to become a sexagenarian nanny. Another top- notch comic performance by Williams. who makes the most of his split personality zest without becoming overly sentimental. Hugely enjoyable and well pitched with gags for the whole audience. Glasgow: Odeon. Strathclyde: Cannon.
I Naked (18) (Mike Leigh. UK. 1993) David Thewlis. Katrin Cartlidge. Lesley Sharp. 126 mins. Johnny. a cynical drifter. wanders around the homeless of London spouting a bitter philosophy. An episodic. bleak. but bitingly funny portrait of 90s Britain that suffers from a few characters who could only exist in a Mike Leigh world. Scenes of sexual violence may be difficult for some audience members to sit through. but the virtuoso performance from Thewlis is marvellous. Strathclyde: UCl East Kilbride.
I Point Blank (18) (John Boorman. US. 1967) Lee Marvin. Angie Dickinson. Keenan Wynn. 92 mins. Revenge-ridden Marvin is bent on justifying his dreamlike existence and turning the tables on the mysterious criminal Organisation which employed him in this tense. well crafted thriller that boasts an imaginitive and influential treatment of time. Boorman's impressive first American feature is made memorable by Marvin's brilliant portrayal of an outmoded gunman confusedly taking on a world overrun by technology. Glasgow: GFT.
I Pulp Fiction (18) (Quentin Tarantino. US. 1994) John Travolta. Samuel Jackson. Uma Thurman. Bruce Willis. 150 mins. Much more ambitious than Reservoir Dogs. the most awaited second feature of the 90s has many scenes that crackle with Tarantino wit. and a few others that fall flat as the writer-director bravely experiments. Interlocking stories in the pulp crime manner concern hitmen. ailing boxers. gang bosses and their molls. drug fiends. and assorted riff-raff. I Raging Bull (18) (Martin Scorsese. US. 1980) Robert de Niro. Cathy Moriarty. Joe Pesci. 129 mins. Middleweight boxing champ Jake La Motta finds it difficult to sustain his early success and as his career fades. he declines into a travesty of his former self. De Niro‘s stunning physical presence dominates Scorsese's savagely bleak study of self-destructive machismo. Edinburgh: Cameo.
