Worth a peek ifyou're passing. this final exhibition for the season at the Old Gala House takes a look at the work of the emergency services in the Borders. both past and present. Exhibits include the Selkirkshire Birch and a list of offences committed in Galashiels during the 1890s.

I SHEEP DOG TRIALS Sat 8. 7.40am—5pm. Haswellsykes Manor. signposted from the Glasgow road. about one mile outside Peebles. Free. Sheep dog trials with a sheep show. games. childrens‘ races in the afternoon and a hill race at lpm. Refreshments.
CENTRAL & TAYSIDE
I MILLS OBSERVATORY Mon—Fri. 3—10pm; Sat. 2—5pm. Mills Observatory. Balgay Park. Dundee. 0382 67138. Free. As the nights draw in. the observatory starts its winter programme of evening viewing. Most of the observatory is open to the public. with slide shows and exhibitions. On a clear night you can use the 10in telescope. On the last Friday of every month there is an open night from 7.30pm with a talk about what can be seen in the night sky over the coming month. Start watching or. if it is cloudy. a look at the planetarium. Mills provide a free monthly star map. Phone for a c0py.

I WILDWOOD EXHIBITION Weekends until 18 Dec (daily Sat 15—Sun 23). 10.30am—3.30pm. Caledonian Hall, Royal Botanic Garden. lnverleith Row, Edinburgh. £1.50 (£1/50p). This major new exhibition and multimedia show at the Botanics tells the story of Scotland’s woodlands. past. present and future. The centre-piece of the exhibition is in the Caledonian Hall with three different
. strands. The Slide Workshop and Ross
and Cromarty District council have put together a multimedia presentation. there is a sculptured woodland environment evoking the atmosphere of a Caledonian pinewood and the ‘Will the Wildwood Rise Again?’ exhibit presents alternative views on the future of Scotland‘s woodland heritage from such diverse organisations as the RSPB. the Forestry Commission. the John Muir Trust and Trees for Life.
