Orbital have become far more than
. faceless knob twiddlers. They’ve ' single-handedly put the pop into
techno, making anthems for a rave and post-rave generation. Mixmag cover stars, Glastonbury headliners, Face feature material: the llartnoll siblings Phil and Paul have become pivotally important figures on the techno scene. You may know already that they made their first record Chime for just £1, that they’re from Sevenoaks in Kent, that Phil has two kids called louis and Milo. All proof that Orbital are no ordinary band. They’re not just stars. They’re the voice of 90s youth, who experienced spiritual awakening dancing in warehouses and fields to the distilled melodies of Belfast, Lush and Halcyon. Phil and Paul’s own teenage epiphanies came via punk, going to Anti llazi League festivals, seeing The Clash and Steel Pulse. And you can almost hear this influence tanginy in the charming OIY rough-hewn feel of Chime.
Despite commercial success Phil and Paul continue to demonstrate their allegiance to the counter-culture politics they discovered as punks. Phil and Paul recently described the sentiments behind their most recent Snivilisation album: ‘lt’s got an overall flavour, hopefully one that sums up the civilised society we live in,’ claimed Paul. ‘That’s why it’s got a title, rather than the others, which
were just collection of tracks.’ The concept, they explain, is related to all aspects of the social entropy we are currently experiencing: waste, pollution, the distribution of wealth and most specifically the Criminal Justice Bill. Phil argues that travellers have been particularly singled out: ‘They’re being made total scapegoats for the whole country’s problems. One country - I forget which fuckin’ awful one - has banned new-age travellers altogether. It’s a form of ethnic cleansing. We live in a very fascist country, you know.’ Electronic boffins with a conscience, Top 40 stars with underground credibility; going to see Orbital isn’t just a leisure activity it’s now an official ritual part of being a 90s clubber.
