Soul man
You may have heard or LTJ Bukem. The main players on the jungle/hardcore scene - Foul Play, Omni Trio, DJ Rap and 4 Hero all speak or him with reverence: in glowing, awe-inspired terms. Bukem’s reputation preceeds him. In the eyes of many he single- handedly put the words musical sophistication into the jungle lexicon at a time when ‘darkcore’ reigned.
His 1992 Music track is viewed as a pivotal point in the history of hardcore. Sweeping, orchestrated strings that surge emotively: theraputic waves of melody that roll imperceptibly with the beats. It’s not surprising when you learn that Bukem’s background is rooted in hip hop and soul: ‘I started liJing ten years ago when I was sixteen,’ he explained recently, ‘When I was nineteen or twenty I started mixing hip hop and soul, from there I got into rave in the summers of 88/89, but I started playing out as Bukem in 1990 at Gullivers Ilightclub, Confusions.’
Musically inspired by Lonnie Liston Smith and Chick Corea, Bukem set up his own label Good Looking Records in 1992. The first release, Demon’s Theme was closely followed by Apollo and the seminal Music. lie maintains that the subtle beauty of tracks like

19.5 owes much to his classical musical training. ‘I played piano from an early age and played different instruments in bands. I’ve always liked music.’
Bukem’s passion for deep house, soul and jazz, helped hardcore progress from its novelty-led sampladelic state. ‘When it comes down to it I’m a soul person, that’s what makes me move. I could see myself making soul tracks on the Tribe Called Quest, Galliano kind of vibe. I am not into the noise aspect of hardcore, you can only do so much with it. The music itself can go on forever: the vocals, basslines and strings. (Bethan Cole)
