US. 1993) Liam Neeson. Ralph Fiennes. Ben Kingsley. 195 mins. During WW2. German industrialist and Nazi Party member Oskar Schindler saved the lives of over a thousand Jewish employees by demanding they work in his factory rather than be sent to Auschwitz. Spielberg's magnificent movie and Neeson's performance capture this enigmatic brand of heroism. while depicting traumatic events in documentary-like black-and-white images. Psychologically complex. emotionally devastating and artistically irnpeaclrable. this is one of the best films ever made. Strathclyde: L'Cl East Kilbride.

I Short Cuts ( 18) (Robert Altman. US. 1993) Andie MacDowell. Tim Robbins. Lily Tomlin. Tom Waits. et al. 187 mins. Long and absorbing. Altman's patchwork approach shifts Raymond Carver's short stories to Los Angeles. a city socially and geologically on the point of falling apart. The stories cross over. character's lives rub together. threads are picked up after receedirtg for a while —- this is classy soap opera at its best. with flawless acting and construction. Larry Winters. David Hayman‘s impressive feature debut as director is an audacious and passionate attempt to get inside the head of a very complex individual. With an electric. award-winning performance by Iain Glen at its core. Followed by ‘In The Public lnterest'. a panel discussion on punishment — in prisons and in society at large. The way it's been sold you'd think it was sonre total guitar hardcore odyssey vibe. but in fact it's a honey-coated romance that just happens to take place in Seattle. There's a high recognition factor for twetrtysotnetlrings in the audience as they watch the ensemble cast find its way around misdirected crushes. parties from hell and crap gigs. Watch your life flash before you. Edinburgh: Cameo.

English prissiness meets Australian freedom. as a newa an'ived linglish curate and his wife visit the home of ‘scandalous‘ painter Norman Lindsay. ~Hugh Grant is his bumbling screen self. Tara Fitzgerald perches on the edge of a sexual chasm as his wife. supermodel Iille Macherson brings an easy. urrselfcorrscious sextrality to it all. ()ne of the most enchanting and influential of animated features. The central character is a mite wet but the individualistic dwarfs. memorable songs. superbly crafted backdrops and characters make this an essential cinematic experience. .\'ow restored. frame by frame. with the colour as sharp as ever. With LA SWA‘I' man Jack Traven (Reeves) rrp against mad bomber Howard Payne (Hopper) in a tower-block elevator siege. a brrs wired to blow if it drops below 5()mph and LA's as-yet-unfinished subway. this is a movie that will leave you on a high for days afterwards. Dru 'ged at his stag night and drrrrrpcd naked on a Scottish island. Neil (Martin Cltrnes) has only a couple of days to get back to London for his wedding. But nasty best man and supposed best friend Gary (Michael Pracd) has prrt plenty more stumbling blocks in Neil's way. .S'mgge'rc'r/ knocks about from one comic set- piece to another. with debut director Clurres making a good job of keeping the laughs coming. A convincingly hard-edged account of the seige of the titular city during WW2. seen from a German perspective. lacks the extra emotive dimension that would result in a genuinely heartfelt viewer response. However. the production valtres are sttrrrrrirrg. giving the film an enveloping veracity even if the sentiments do stay at the war-is-hell level. Edinburgh: Filrnlrotrse. I Tales From A Hard City ( 15) (Kim Flitcroft. I'K. 199-1) 80 rrrirrs. ()ne of the most lauded British documentaries of the year (and winner of the top prize at the Marseilles lrrtcrrrational Documentary Festival). this is a lly-on-tlre-wall look at the underbelly of modern Sheffield. A car thief. a would-be media mogul. a singing dancer who wants to be the next ~Kylie Minogrre - like characters in a work of fiction. these people really want to act for the camera. Partly a homage to the 32 sections of Bach's Goldberg Variations. partly a radical approach to screen biography. this film tells the life-story of piano genius Glenn Gould without resorting to cliched archive footage. The acting is superb. the structure fascinating. the music as vibrant as ever. Rarely has the act of artistic creation been presented on screen with strclr creativity. Iidinburgh: Cameo. I 3 Women ( 15) (Robert Altman. US. 1977) Shelley Duvall. Sissy Spacek. Janice Rule. 122 mins. Crawlineg slow. but minutely observed. Altman's character study follows the personality changes that ensue when a trio of women — a naive newcomer. a fashion-conscious nurse and the tacitrrrn wife of an alcoholic — becorrre friends. Complex and overly enigmatic. it's still one of the director's more intriguing works. Glasgow: GFI‘. I Thumbelina (U) (Don Bluth. US. 1993) Animator Bltrtlr comes close to rivalling Disney with this charming fairytale filled with little folk. princes. easy-to-follow messages and a Barry Manilow soundtrack. Comic bookstore assistant Clarence meets. sleeps with and marries novice hooker Alabama within a rtrattcr of hours. then the lovebirds find themselves on the run with an accidentally stolen case of cocaine. Limelight- stealing cameos and writer Quentin 'l‘arantino's verbal set-pieces lire this excellent movie. the epitonre of disposable pop culture for the fast- food generation. Iidinburgh: Cameo. Arnie rrrasquerades as a computer salesman to keep long-suffering spouse Curtis in the dark about his real job in the hi-tech spy world. At a price tag of over SlOOm. Cameron's attempt to redefine the visual possibilities of the action genre is thrilling. disappointing and exasperatirrg in almost equal measures. brrt at least the money's up there on the screen.
