DEBT!- THE SILVER DARLINGS Citizens’ Theatre, Glasgow. Until Sat 3
Sept. If such a thing as the Honing Marketing Board exists, they can anticipate a bumper catch with Wildcat’s latest production. The programme is scattered with adverts extolling the nutritional virtues of the ‘sllver darlings’ and in the play the herring harvest becomes the lifeblood of the Caithness community whose story this is. For once, Wildcat seems to be with the government on a particular issue and John McGrath’s adaptation of the lleil Gunn novel provides basic, no-frills nourishment. it has to be said, Wildcat is not exactly going out on a limb here. The track record of other productions concerning bygone rural Celtic communities smiling through adversity and celebrating honest toil is hardly discouraging. Audiences lap this sort of thing right up.
So at first it’s hard not to feel sceptical. Such an obvious formula, such a hackneyed script, such stereotypical characters - the men are stoic types who always bring the catch home, their women resourceful householders with a seemingly endless capacity for hospitality - and trite dialogue which allows lines like, ‘We don’t have much here but you’re welcome to share it,’ when they should have been cast back into the lrothing ocean.
But gradually the charm of this Tale of Ordinary Fishing Folk overrides its predictability. Kevin McKidd takes on
predictability
his first professional role as the ' pivotal character Finn, who narrates the story of his mother’s life and eventually features in it himself as the adolescent hero. McKidd oscillates from lively storyteller to personable protagonist with impressive ease. However the principal deciding factor is the integral use of music in helping to create a sense of place. The villagers whistle while they work rather than the Wildcat speciality of bursting incongruously into song when a valid point has to be enforced, so for those who can’t stomach the seafood there’s a diet of enchanting hymns, worksongs and traditional reels to feast on instead. You can't beat a football play to draw in the crowds and this celebration of Rangers FC should be no exception. A top-notch cast including Jonathan Watson and Barbara Rafferty tells the somewhat sanitised story of the 12 l-year-old club.
