Silver Darlings
An everyday story of herring flshennen in Caithness is not a description that Immediately lights a fire In the minds of everyday lowland landlubbers - yet Wildcat aims to do lust that with Its stage version of Neil Dunn’s novel The Silver Darlings.
But it would be wrong to dismiss one of the most powerful and beautiful Scottish novels written this century as a fleshed out tale of fishing folk. certainly playwright John McGrath who adapted the book and went so far as to name his son after the hero, would take issue with any such accusation. And director John aett as the man in charge of staging the epic tale is only too aware of the work’s depth. ‘lt’s a very richly textured play,’
he says between rehearsals. ‘There are elements of dancing, the sea, religion, paganism and of course, being Gunn, there’s the whole thing of mysticism and memories.’
On a basic level Silver Darlings is a rites-of-passage novel for the central figure, Finn, as he comes to terms with his place In the tightly-knit community and, despite being set In the early 19th century, the play, feels Dett, has a universal relevance that transcends any time frame. One of the
main qualities that attracted him to the play was the inner confidence of the characters. ‘These characters are very sexy,’ he says. ‘They’re sexy because they know who they are. They have this great sense of community in that they live their shared lives In a very uncomplicated way. None of them are fucked up in a 20th century post- industrial way,’ he laughs. (Ann Donald)
