I love And lltuan lienalns(l8) (Denys Arcand. Canada. 1994) Thomas Gibson. Ruth Marshall. Cameron Bancroft. 100 mins. Based on Brad Fraser's play. Arcand's latest grasps the original's any style ofdialogue and twin narrative prongs of sexual uncertainty and ongoing serial killings. While the two plots may not always sit comfortably together. the thematic unity — of the dangers of love and tum-on of murder - is perfectly realised for a 90s audience. Sharp ensemble playing rounds off a clever and symbolic piece. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I M. Butterﬂy (15) (David Cronenberg. US. 1993) Jeremy Irons. John Lone. 101 mins. Extremely low-key Scottish opening for Cronenberg‘s adaptation of David Henry Hwang's stage play. which ﬁnds lrons‘ French diplomat falling for a Peking Opera singer in pre-Cultural Revolution China. Glasgow: GFT. I Who Minder Mystery (PG) (Woody Allen. US. 1993) Woody Allen. Diane Keaton. Alan Alda. 108 mins. When her elderly neighbour dies mysteriously and suddenly. Carol Lipton (Keaton) does some amateur sleuthing along with the New York literary set. Allen returns to the comic formula that ﬁrst made his name - neat plot. snappy one-liners — making this a much more approachable and enjoyable experience than his more serious work of late. I Maverick (PG) (Richard Donner. US. 1994) Mel Gibson. Jodie Foster. Jatnes Gamer. 127 mins. Romantic gambler Bret Maverick has got to get up a big enough pot to enter a poker game with a stake of half a million dollars. but encounters various loose and at times unconnected adventures on the way. A card-con movie with western trappings. Maverick showcases the ‘unpredictable' quirks of Gibson's screen persona. the kind of thing that he gives a lunatic edge in the Lethal Weajmn series. Rollicking. pre-packaged entertainment that slips into the shambolic. General release.

I *8 Doubtfire (PG) (Chris Columbus. US. 1993) Robin Williams. Sally Field. Pierce Brosnan. 125 mins. Separated from his wife and kids. out-of-work voice actor Daniel Hillard (Williams) dons make-up and body-padding to become a sexagenan'an nanny. Another top- notch comic perfonnance by Williams. who makes the most of his split personality zest without becoming overly sentimental. Hugely enjoyable and well pitched with gags for the whole audience. Glasgow: Odeon.

I My Girl 2 (PG) (Howard Zieff. US. 1993) Anna Chlumsky. Austin O‘Brien. Dan Aykroyd. Jamie Lee Curtis. 98 mins. While off at her uncle's for the summer. Vada (Chlurnsky) researches the life of her deceased mother for a school project. This sequel to 1992's surprise hit opens the story out a little and still manages to be sweetly nostalgic and painfully honest — in a young teen sense — at the same time. Max Von Sydow. Bonnie Bedelia. 120 mins. A mysterious stranger opens an antique shop in Castle Rock and has the town‘s inhabitants at each other's throaLs when he demands a prank in payment. Superior Stephen King adaptation. helped along by climactic pyrotechnics. a comic-style morality slant on avarice and an exceptional cast. Edinburgh: Odeon.

It‘s the future. and troublesome prisoners have been placed on a remote jungle island where they've split into two groups: land-loving hippie types and belligerent Mad Max clones. Cue some testosterone-fuelled violence. a rising bodycount and a loner with a dark and shady past. A get-the-boys-round kind of thing. Central: Allanpark.

I llorth (PG) (Rob Reiner. US. 1994) Elijah Wood. Jon Lovitz. Bruce Willis. 87 mins. Universally popular. but ignored by his folks. North goes out in search of new parents. but time is running out as he travels the world: better ﬁnd a new set soon. or it's the orphanage. And then there’s the pressure from the kids of the world who are enjoying the new-found power his antics have given them. A constantly inventive fable that shows respect for all ages of its audience. I Salmonberries ( 12) (Percy Adlon. Germany. 1991) kd lang. Rosel Zech. Chuck Conners. 94 mins. In her ﬁlm debut. lang uses her androgynous looks to their best ability as an orphan living in a remote Alaskan village. who befriends the local librarian. Both attempt to lay their ghosts to rest on ajoumey to Berlin. a metaphor for the innerjourneys they simultaneously undergo. Terminally slow

exposition leads into an interesting second half.

but by then most viewers will be deadened by frustration. Glasgow: GET.

I Schindler's list (15) (Steven Spielberg. US. 1993) Liam Neeson. Ralph Fiennes. Ben Kingsley. 195 mins. During WW2. Gennan industrialist and Nazi Party member ()skar Schindler saved the lives of over a thousand Jewish employees by demanding they work in his factory rather than be sent to Auschwitz. Spielberg‘s magniﬁcent movie and Neeson's performance capture this enigmatic brand of heroism. while depicting traumatic events in documentary-like black-and-white images. Psychologically complex. emotionally devastating and artistically impeachable. this is one of the best ﬁlms ever made. Glasgow: Odeon.

Underneath the apple-pie ideals of the Sutphins' model suburban borne. mom Beverly is going to deadly extremes to keep her family nest feathered. The sickest. funniest American comedy to hop the Atlantic for ages. Waters latest adds a zesty twist of cruelty to satire on family values. political correctness and America's adulation of criminals in the media. Glasgow: MGM Film Centre.

I Sirens ( 15) (John Duigan. Aus. 1994) Hugh Grant. Tara Fitzgeral. Sam Neill. Elle MacPherson. 94 mins. Christian morality meets bohemian expression. English prissiness meets Australian freedom. as a newly arrived English curate and his wife visit the home of ‘scandalous' painter Norman Lindsay. Hugh Grant is his bumbling screen self. Tara Fitzgerald perches on the edge of a sexual chasm as his wife. supermodel Elle MacPherson brings an easy. unselfconscious sexuality to it all. Fairly dull. really. but the nude tableaux add visual appeal. We may not know much about art. but we know what we like. Glasgow: Odeon. All UCIs.

I Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (U) (Walt Disney, US. 1937) With the voices of Adriana Caselotti. Harry Stockwell. Lucille La Verne. 83 mins. One of the most enchanting and influential of animated features. The central character is a mite wet bttt the individualistic dwarfs. memorable songs. superbly crafted backdrops and characters make this an essential cinematic experience. Now restored. frame by frame. with

the colour as sharp as ever. General release. I Staggered (15) (Martin Clunes. UK. 1994)

95 mins. Drugged at his stag night and dumped naked on a Scottish island. Neil (Martin Clunes) has only a couple of days to get back to London for his wedding. But nasty best man and supposed best friend Gary (Michael Praed) has put plenty more stumbling blocks in Neil’s way. Staggered knocks about from one comic set- piece to another. with debut director Clunes making a good job of keeping the laughs coming. Edinburgh: Odeon.

I Thelma & louise (15) (Ridley Scott. US. 1991) Susan Sarandon. Geena Davis. Harvey Keitel. Michael Madsen. 129 mins. The buddy/road movie genres are tumed on their heads as Sarandon and Davis grasp the steering wheel and head off leaving a trail of nturder and mayhem in their wake. On one level. the ﬁlm is the critical catalyst that had the feminists cheering and put the stars on the cover of 7ime magazine: just as importantly. it's an accessible piece of entertainment with excellent central performances. I Tlrtrmbelina (U) (Don Bluth.17S. 1993) Animator Bluth comes close to rivalling Disney with this chamting fairy tale ﬁlled with little folk. princes. easy-to-follow messages and a Barry Manilow soundtrack. I Tom And Viv ( 15) (Brian Gilbert. [IS/UK. I993) Willem Dafoe. Miranda Richardson. Rosemary Harris. 125 mins. Not the most favourable portrait of the author of The Wasteland. as the ﬁlm centres on Eliot's role in the unnecessary committal of his wife in a mental asylum. However. the dialogue is stilted. the direction flat and Dafoe gives an uncharacteristically poor performance. Richardson. however. is more powerful in another of the ‘slightly mad‘ roles she has made her own. Fife: Adam Smith.

I True lies ( l 5) (James Cameron. US. 1994) Arnold Schwarsenegger. Jamie Lee Curtis. Tom Arnold. 141 mins. Arnie masquerades as a computer salesman to keep long-suffering spouse Curtis in the dark about his real job in the hi-tech spy world. At a price tag of over SIOOm. Cameron's attempt to redeﬁne the visual possibilities of the action genre is thrilling. disappointing and exasperating in almost equal measures. but at least the money's up there on the screen. Dodgy valuejudgements. brilliant wholesale destruction. See review. General release.

I True Romance (18) (Tony Scott. L'S. 1993) Christian Slater. Patricia Arquette. Dennis Hopper. 119 mins. Comic bookstore assistant Clarence meets. sleeps with and marries novice hooker Alabama within a matter of hours. then the lovebirds ﬁnd themselves on the run with an accidentally stolen case of cocaine. Limelight- stealing cameos and writer Quentin Tarantino‘s verbal set-pieces ﬁre this excellent movie. the epitome of disposable pop culture for the fast- food generation. Glasgow: Odeon. I What's Eating Gilbert Grape? (12) (Lasse llallstrom. US. 1993) Johnny Depp. Juliette Lewis. Leonardo Di Caprio. 118 mins. For once. Depp is the sole ﬁgure of calm in an oddball world. the oldest son in a dysfunctional family who live in a neurotic Iowa backwater. Only when holiday-maker lewis arrives does he begin to consider his own feelings. With one eye on detail. the other on the absurd. director Lasse (My Life As A Dog) llallstrorn delivers a sympathetic romance surrounded by American foibles. The acting is superb from all concerned. A low-key wonder. one of the ﬁlms of the year. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I Wings Of Desire (15) (Wirn Wenders. W. Germany .1987) Bruno Ganz. Otto Sander. Solveig Domrnartin. Peter Falk. 127 mins. Restless angel Ganz on duty over Berlin takes a tip from American movie star and former angel Falk on the possibilities of crossing over. and follows his mentor's path to consummate his relationship with beautiful circus acrobat Dommartin. Gorgeous black-and-white photography and a sensitive feel for the people and places of Berlin grace this thematically rich and uncharacteristically optimistic slice of Wenders enchantrnent. Highly recommended. Glasgow: GF'T.

I Without You 1’. Nothing (18) (John Boskovich. US. 1991) Sandra Bemhard. 90 mins. The ﬁlmed version of Bernhard's 1990 stage show will be greeted with open-mouthed bewilderment as she embarks on a series of satirical monologues. interspersed with her own renditions of soul classics and go-go dancing interludes.
