Nicolson Street has undergone something of a renaissance recently; the opening of the Festival Theatre has re-galvanised the area and attracted new businesses. One such enterprise is Nicolsons. the new restaurant which has opened opposite the Festival Theatre. on the former site of Martins Tea Rooms and Bakery. Dreamt up by the same team who opened the Grain Store Restaurant on Victoria Street. this fresh addition to the Edinburgh eating- out scene is run on the ethos ofgood quality food and aims to cater for those in need of a quick pick-me-up cappuccino afternoon tea or an intimate meal a (/(’ll.t‘.
‘We wanted to supply the son of service available on the continent.‘ explains the front of house manager. Nigel. ‘Nicolsons is a place where people can drop in at any time of day and have just a drink or a full meal. We like to give people what they want.

The staff are passionate about what they do and have recently taken self sacrifice to the extreme and dedicated several happy hours to the quest for the perfect patisserie to provide their croissants and pain au chocolat. Much arduous munching later a winner was declared. Everything else is prepared on the premises. from having their own experts to choose the best cuts of meat to smoking their own fish and game. The cafe menu. which is available from noon until midnight. offers a diverse range of sandwiches made with different breads and innovative fillings (smoked venison. anyone?) as well as a range of salads. assorted skewered delicacies and other light meals. If you’re in search of something more substantial. the evening menu will tickle your palate with a choice of dishes including toasted goat‘s cheese or sardines grilled with tomatoes to start with and vegetable gnocchi to

venison loin roasted with chestnuts for the main course. There are also pre and post-theatre menus at £8.50 for two courses and £10 for three courses.
()n the liquid refreshment front. all tastes are catered for. Nicolsons features a comprehensive wine list which focuses on the New World while also giving a representative sample of European tipples. A wide selection of half bottles are available. as are quarter bottles of champagne. There is also much to choose from if you are looking for something softer — creamy milkshakes made with real fruit, a range of freshly squeezed fruit and vegetable juices along with home-made lemonade and limeade are all available.
