John Rocha’s new collection will be featured in Scotland’s largest ever fashion show. Bethan Cole previews the Festival Ball.
'The idea for the Bali originated last year - we wanted to create an opportunity for people in Edinburgh to have a good time outwith all the Festival mayhem in August.‘ Morris Paton, one third of Firefly Productions. is explaining the motivation behind the Festival Ball.

coats and hand-painted chiffon slips foregrounds wearability rather than avant-garde shock value. This year you
won't see the models grimacing in agony as they struggle along on 10in platforms. Firefly intend to soundtrack the show with the live experimental rhythms of Martin Bennett. a Glasgow- trained composer who jams tribal samples with improvised Celtic pipe and ilute playing.
in addition. thejazzual sounds of Big Beat. Festival FM and Latin hip-hop outfit Freshly Squeezed have been co- opted to keep a hip-grinding funky sensibility on proceedings. ‘We didn’t want to lose the younger. clubby element.‘ says Paton. Big Beat DJs Simon. Mark and Angus were chosen for their appeal to a more sophisticated breed ofclubber. The Big Beat monthly sessions attract a discerning mix of acid jazz modernists and trip-hop hipsters — their success has earned the club a residency at the Assembly Rooms during the Festival.
Paton concedes there‘s an incredibly rich assortment of entertainment on offer: ‘The overall aim is to get away from the formal. black tie connotations of the word ‘ball‘ and provide a forum for the very best in contemporary dance. music and fashion.‘ And of course a prime opportunity for people to dress up, look drop-dead glamorous and behave in a suitably decadent style.
