Culzean is open daily and is always good for a day out: send the kids off to get lost on the beach or the wild-life walks while you wander round the Castle (£3.50/£1.80 extra). There are two weeks of kids’ activities every weekday: Mon 8—Fri l2 and Mon 22—Fri 16 August. On Sunday 4 September there is an Equestrian Driving Event including cross country and dressage sections.

Refreshments available. I VIKING FESTIVAL Thurs l—Sun 4 Sept. Various venues around Largs. Vikings lived in the Largs area from the 9th to the l3th centuries. bringing over not only their warriors but also farmers and their families. This festival is a celebration of the culture they brought and their ultimate defeat in the Battle of Largs in 1263. A Viking village will be built on the Largs Esplanade (daily. 10am—6pm. Free) with an exhibition. lots of activities and special events every day. ()n Saturday at 7.30pm the Battle of Largs will be re-enacted at the Pencil Monument by Regia Anglorum. the UK's largest battle re-enactinent society. with weaponry displays and full explanation of battle tactics. At 8.30pm at Iongship will be consigned to the gods with a firework display to light the way. ()n Sunday evening at 8.30pm a torchlit procession will march from the Viking
l BEATINC THE RETREAT Sun 21, 9—11pm. Stirling Castle Esplanade, Stirling Castle. £5 (£4). 0786 473544. A mini tattoo with six pipe bands, the 40-strong Scottish Fiddle Orchestra and the very wonderful MacUmba followed by a seventeen-minute firework display. This year the event will make full use of the seating left up after the 0840 and Runrig concerts. Every day there are a variety of living history-type free events taking place around the old part of Stirling. Every Saturday there is free street entertainment in the Port Street precinct with everything from iugglers and stilt walkers to music from the likes of the Tartan Amoebas. There is also an extensive programme of activities taking place each week, with ghost walks, pipe bands and ceilidhs. I WORLD PIPE BAND CHAMPIONSHIPS Sat 13 Aug. 9.30atn-7pm. Bellahouston Park. Glasgow. £2.50 (£1.50). Lovers of the sound of the pipes are rather well catered for at this event. with 188 pipe bands from all over the globe taking part in the competition for the World Pipe Band Champion of 1994. Besides the hands. there‘s a full programme of drum major competitions. Highland games. Highland dancing. at tug-of—war competition and exhibition shinty match.

Peebleshlre. £8 (£5). 0896 830785/830323. A highlight of the year at Traquair is the annual fair when a host of excellent entertainers throng to this, the oldest inhabited house in Scotland. Once in, all entertainments are free, although you’ll have to pay for your pints of wonderfully tasty Traquair Ale. Among the entertainers booked this year are ex-Mouth Music singer Talitha McKenzie’s Band, the Hollywood Rockets, the dare-devil Chimaera aerial trapeze group and the Dodgy Clutch Theatre Company. Also a classical music garden, children’s entertainment, crafts and complementary medicine. Sunday 31 July is the SHEEP AND WOOL DAY at Traquair, 10.30am—5.30pm. (£3.50/£1.50). This is a day out for both expert and amateur alike with everything lovers of wool could desire. Besides the sheep dog demonstrations, rare breed displays and Scotland’s largest sheep, just about every part of the process of turning fleece into a iumper will be demonstrated as well as drystane dykeing and crook making.
