As techno continues to fragment and remould itself into a thousand different permutations: Dust Brothers hip-trance, Wagon Christ weirdness, Orbital breakbeat even, there are times when the Detroit sounds of six years ago might never have been created. That’s where have Angel comes in. Carrying the torch for a pure, underground delineation of techno since he started playing it in 87/88, ilave Angel has impeccably rigid standards of what constitutes a ‘techno’ track. ‘l think the music has diversified a lot,’ he muses. ‘I do like
the way things are going in that the handful of people that are into it now are its true inheritors.’ He cites Dave Clarke and Point Zero (an act on his flotation label) as the future stars of British techno, ‘And Carl, Juan and Derrick as always.’
Angel’s own back catalogue, an impressive collection of crisp articulate techno shot through with syncopated jazzy impro exemplifies his focused conception perfectly. This may sound restrained, but when you listen to the sassy handclap beats and doodling sax on ‘llocturne’ (Royal Techno EP) or the understated harmonics of ‘1 st Symphony’ you realise that this isn’t purism in some tight-lipped, strait-laced sense, just high resolution production married to [any sensibility. ‘Mingus, Parker, 8e- bop, l was brought up on that stuff,’ says Angel, probably slightly tired of being asked about the fact that his father was a [an musician. ‘My music is random but within the range of a four bar or eight bar loop, that’s about as far as it goes.’ Dave Angel plots the points where scientific impro meets electronic scat with a deep sense of tradition. Way past cool.
