POOR SUPER MAH
Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, until Sun 7 Aug and in Edinburgh Fringe. Characters with dysfunctional backgrounds, a riot of colourful sexuality, plenty of swearing and a severe pushing back of the boundary of on-stage nudity: you know precisely what to expect from a Brad Fraser play. out hold back before passing out the dirty-raincoat allegations. Although all your expectations will be gratified, titillation is as far from the
l stage in Poor Super Man as the
character at Shannon is from getting his sex change.
The plot is predictable too. A painter suffering from artist’s block falls in
" love with a married man. You know the
seduction will happen, the block be relieved and the painting occur. After all, one of the first revelations oi the husband, Matt, to David the painter is that he already deceives his wife by having a quiet smoke in the store room of their ailing restaurant. The

they, won’t-they’ fascination. It is a triumph of both direction and
' innovation that such a tricky aim
Poor Super Man: calling sexuality into question
succeeds. Like the sharp, dry witticisms which sting through the dialogue, the scenes change from bedroom to studio to restaurant with the abrasive rush of a wasp. As each shift underlines what has gone before, so the subtitles projected onto the back of the stage underline the drama. ‘I love you,’ claims one character. You know it is a lie, but to have the word ‘lie’ emblazoned on stage gives it a concrete reality.
Which is not to belittle the performances. Although they are undermined by some dodgy applications of a Canadian accent, they are more than good enough to upstage the gimmicks of technology
and draw out the feelings of the audience towards the characters. Poor Super Man is more than another play about AIDS and male sexuality. All our sexualities and motivations are called into question in a thought-provoking, yet entertaining evening. (Thom oibdin]
