Being caught naked in a Siberian snowstorm is funnier. General release.
I The Premonition (18) (Rumle Hammerich. Sweden. 1992) Tova Magnusson. Figge Norling. Bjorn Kjellman. 116 mins. A school senior. who‘s having disturbing visions. begins to see her erotic fantasies being acted out in real life. Hammerich's film strains for style. throwing around thriller cliches and red herrings as it moves from adolescent sexual tension to a uninvolving murder mystery. See review. Glasgow: GET.

I Reality Bites (12) (Ben Stiller. US. 1994) Winona Ryder. Ethan llawke. Ben Stiller. 99 mins. Soon after graduation. Lelaina (Ryder) loses her TV job (and the chance to complete her autobiographical documentary). and so has to buy food for her Generation X flatmates on the credit card daddy gave her. Self-indulgent. middle-class American problems that are hard to relate to and impossible to sympathise with fill this movie. If this is reality. it sucks rather than bites. Glasgow: MGM Film Centre. I Reservoir Dogs (18) (Quentin Tarantino. US. 1992) Harvey Keitel. Tim Roth. Michael Madsen. 100 mins. A gang of hoods. known only to each other by colour-coded nicknames. meets at an abandoned warehouse to figure how out their rigorously planned heist went so drastically wrong. The best debut in years from writer-director Tarantino. whose stylish violence seduces the audience into complicity. Brilliant in every sense of the word. General release.

A more tongue-in-cheek approach than before finds Detroit's hardware cop rebelling against his OCP masters. who want to sweep the homeless from the steets in order to build a luxury appartment complex. I Rookie Of The Year (PG) (Daniel Stern. US. 1993) Thomas lan Nicholas. Gary Busey. Dan Hedaya. Daniel Stern. Having survived as one of the City Slr'ckers trio. Stern now gets to try his hand behind the camera with that genre that always strikes out on UK turf — the baseball movie. This is very much a kid's movie. a modern fairytale about a 12-year-old boy whose clumsiness on the field turns around when he breaks his arm. only to recover as a top pitcher. Really. why bother? I noulin l (12) (Hiroyuki Kitakubo. Japan. 1991) 78 mins. Based on a story by Otomo Katsuhiro. writer of the acclaimed Akr'ra series. this lacks the groundbreaking animation splendour of that movie. The story features a bed that will cook. feed. wash. exercise. entertain and toilet its elderly patient. but a sudden malfunction brings about the obligatory merging of flesh and technology. Cheer the wrinkly granddad hero. Glasgow Odeon on Sat 9 and Edinburgh Odeon on Sat 16 only.

An absorbing but downbeat tale highlighting homelessness in America. and featuring stand-out performances from the leads and supporting cast. Dillon is the troubled. sensitive youth taken under the wing of the streetwise Glover; together they dream of apartments and jobs. but have to face the harsh reality of the Fort Washington shelter. High-speed police chases and brushes with local crooks keep tip the violence quota in Anderson‘s successful attempt to hit the British MTV generation of filmgoers with slick. commercial fare. The stories cross over. character's lives rub together. threads are picked up after receeding for a while — this is classy soap opera at its best. with flawless acting and construction. Neil (Martin Clones) has only a couple of days to get back to London for his wedding. But nasty best man and supposed best friend Gary (Michael Praed) has ptit plenty more stumbling blocks in Neil's way. The boy from Broxbum directs Hollywood superstars in Tobias Wolff's autobiographical tale of growing up in 50s America with a violent stepfather. Young DiCaprio virtually acts De Niro off screen in this enjoyable. if a little predictable. coming-of-age tale. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I Violent Cop (18) ('l’akeshi Kitano. Japan. 1989) ‘Beat' 'l‘akeshi Kitaiio. Maiko Kawakami. Makoto Ashigawa. 103 mins. Homicide detective Azuma has his own violently idiosyncratic methods of dealing with anyone from juvenile delinquents to gangland bosses. When a series of murders show a durgs link to the force. he becomes personally involved. Comparisons to Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry movies are relevent. but this is much colder. more detached and far more graphic. A powerfully impressive slow-burner. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I Who Bombed Birmingham? (15) A draiiia-doc tracing the story behind the Birmingham pub bombings which killed 21 people in 1974 and saw six lr'ishmen jailed under dubious circuriistances. Using a 1985 journalistic investigation into the case as the basis for the story. this is an enthralling account of political dealing and cover-up that. in its way. is far closer to the truth than In The Name ()fT/lr' l’rirlie'r. Miserable Dorothy runs away from home btit is soon whisked tip into a magical land where her adventures teach her that happiness is to be found in her own back yard. Classic stiit't indeed. just chockful of great songs. characterisation and memorably garish design. At last. a British movie that is brave enough to be openly commercial and play directly to its young adult audience. Cannon's debut is a glossy. slick. in-youi-face thriller. which brings US cop Keitel to London's nightclubs to investigate a series of drug-related murders. Plot gaps and dubious morals apart. it's just what the British film industry needed. Central: Cannon.
