This will be Herbie Hancock”: third visit to the festival, and in a third different guise. Back in 1991, he was part
of a stellar but disappointingly dull electric quartet;
the following year, we heard him in an acoustic quintet
paying tribute to Miles Davis. This year, the numbers continue to rise as Herbie brings over his new eight- piece electric [an-funk band. Since their album isn’t out yet, it remains an unknown quantity on this side of the Atlantic, but a potentially exciting one.

I 29th Street Saxophone Quartet Princes Square. Buchanan Street. 2pm. Free. it‘s odd that the festival have chosen to throw away an appearance by one of the most sophisticated groups in the world — all here as members of Bobby Watson‘s big band — in a setting usually reserved for local bands.

In an attempt to focus the festive atmosphere. this year's outdoor extravaganza will be confined to Bell Street. and features the usual street bands. stilt-walkers. jugglers and general good-natured jazz grooving. ROY AYERS
Fusion fans are well-catered for in this festival, and many of them will be looking forward to a chance to hear American vibes maestro Roy Ayers in action. Ayers’s Ubiquity band is always a classy outfit, and he has acquired a whole new audience for his smooth blend of ian, soul, funk, rap and ethnic influences, which has gone down very well on the current jazz- dance club scene, where he is a definite DJ favourite. He also regularly fills the house at Ronnie Scott’s, records on their Jazz House label, and even wrote a tune for the club’s infamous manager, Pete King. McEwans 80/- Old Fruitmarket, Fri 8, 10.30pm.
