NEHBIE HANCOCK

This will be Herbie Hancock”: third visit to the festival, and in a third different guise. Back in 1991, he was part

of a stellar but disappointingly dull electric quartet;

the following year, we heard him in an acoustic quintet

paying tribute to Miles Davis. This year, the numbers continue to rise as Herbie brings over his new eight- piece electric [an-funk band. Since their album isn’t out yet, it remains an unknown quantity on this side of the Atlantic, but a potentially exciting one.

ROY AYERS

Fusion fans are well-catered for in this festival, and many of them will be looking forward to a chance to hear American vibes maestro Roy Ayers in action. Ayers’s Ubiquity band is always a classy outfit, and he has acquired a whole new audience for his smooth blend of ian, soul, funk, rap and ethnic influences, which has gone down very well on the current jazz- dance club scene, where he is a definite DJ favourite. He also regularly fills the house at Ronnie Scott’s, records on their Jazz House label, and even wrote a tune for the club’s infamous manager, Pete King.
