Sweat is dripping down the walls oi La Belle Angele as behind the lights on stage the DJ slips another irantically- paced record on the turntable. Forget the latest iad in trip-hop techno, however, this music might be based on big fat beats, but there’s nary a computer in sight. This is Club Latino, playing the latest Latin sounds to pleasure the ears and ieet oi clubbers across Scotland.
Salsa. Merengue. Rumba. Cumbia. Flamenco. Lambada. The styles trip oil the tongue with a rhythm every bit as complex as the music itself. Since the rise and demise oi Club Sandino in the mid 80s the Scottish Latin scene was as dry as a bar at a Temperance revival until the emergence of Club Havana in Glasgow two years ago. This weekend Havana celebrates its second birthday with two days oi dead-hot sounds, while over in Edinburgh they’re picking up the beat with a live appearance at the top UK salsa band, the ten-piece Orquesta La Clave at Club Latino.
‘There was always an interest, but there just wasn’t the opportunity ior people to go out and enjoy it,’ says Club Havana impresarlo DJ Jazz. With the easy money to be made from house and techno clubs, and the decline at live gigs, no one was willing to take the gamble at promoting nights based around what is an essentially live sound. But now an
increasing number oi Latin ians - based on a core oi Spaniards and Latin Americans living or studying in Edinburgh and Glasgow — are giving the music the iollowing needed for commercial stability.
‘There are now no less than iour Latin clubs here and a recent Latin dance class offered by Dance Base was over-subscribed by three times,’ says Club Latino’s DJ Simon Hodge. But isn’t learning the steps a problem ior newcomers? ‘The uniortunate thing for most people from this country is that they have not been dancing to the rhythm all their lives,’ says Hodge. ‘But that is a very minor point: ii people enjoy the music then they get on and dance in whatever style they like.’
Outside the nights are hardly tropical, but inside a Latin club things are hot. As oi .lazz says: ‘The music changes the atmosphere. As soon as
