I BORDERS VINTAGE AUTOMOBILE CLUB HISTORIC MOTORING EXTRAVAGANZA Sun 5. 11am—5pm. Mellerstaiii House. off the A6089 between Kelso and Gordon. Hundreds of historic vehicles from all over Scotland. encompassing everything from Minis to MGs and Morgans are expected for this. the largest motoring event in the South of Scotland. Starting on Wednesday 15 at the Cupar Arms at 7.30pm with an evening of fiddling and poetry. this new festival should make any lover of outdoor sounds prick up their ears. The main event is not until Saturday 18. when the Haugh Park will swing to sounds from all over the globe while non-toe tappers can get their fill at the all-important beer tent or wander round the stalls. Headliners are
the Bhundu Boys from Zimbabwe at 8pm. while Dick Gaughan makes a rare appearance during the afternoon and Edinburgh’s Miraclehead will be putting their own particular antidote to blandness to the test at noon. The event runs

I MEADOWS FESTIVAL Sat 4. 9am—6pm/Sun 5 noon—6pm. The Meadows. Edinburgh. Free. As ever. over 150 new and second-hand stalls are the big attraction at the Meadows Festival with bands playing live on stage 1—6pm on both days (see Rock listings for full details). This year sees the added attraction of a mass kite flight on Saturday at 2pm. Bring your own kite or make one at the morning workshops. Also on the Saturday there will be a complementary medicine marquee and a Chinese arts tent with calligraphy. traditional medicine. massage. Tai-Chi and a photographic display. On Sunday the Edinburgh Samba School will be giving a workshop l—2.3()pm. followed by a performance 3—4pm.
I MINERS GALA Sat 1 l. lO.30am—5pm. The Meadows. Edinburgh. Free. The 47th Edinburgh Miners Gala starts with a march from Regent Road. assembling at 10.30am and moving off at l lam. The entertainments at The Meadows start at
11.45am. Guest attractions adding to the round of political speakers in the arts and entertainments tent include The Hurnpff Family and The Pearlfishers (see Rock listings for full details). The Brass and Pipe Band competitions start at 2pm‘. With a funfair. food and drink marquee. a kids fun and games arena. Soccer Sevens and New Image Rugby tournaments all afternoon. and a plethora of stalls. this should be an aftemoon to stay in town for. I OLD TOWN GALA WEEK Sat ll—Sat 18. Various venues around Edinburgh‘s Old Town. Free. The week kicks off on Saturday 11 at the City Chambers Quadrangle at l lam with pipe bands and entertainments from the Old Town Heritage Players. The concentration then moves over the road to Parliament Square l—5.3()pm where there will be a concert of classic and pipe bands. On Sunday 12. Holyrood Park is the venue for a 40s Big Band event with a picnic for a classic and vintage vehicles rally from 11.30am. At l.3()pm. the vehicles will move off to the High Street. which will be closed to normal traffic 2—5pm for an afternoon of street theatre. outdoor market and other entertainments. The week culminates in a big gala at South Gray‘s Close off the Royal Mile on Saturday 18. Throughout the week there will be various walking tours. exhibitions and presentations throughout the Old Town. A full programme is available from the Old Town in formation Centre at the Tron Kirk.

Plenty of advice, plant sales, walks, careers information and exhibitions for the green fingered at this open day for the demonstration garden of Catridge College. The three-acre, south facing garden was laid out in 1957 by George Boyd Anderson to demonstrate a diversity of situations and aspects and includes many novel ideas about the use of solar energy and insulation which are incorporated in the garden‘s buildings.
