I Bran Stoker’s Dracula (I8) (Francis Ford Coppola. US. I992) Gary Oldman. Winona Ryder. Anthony Hopkins. 128 mins. More gothic love story than out-and-out horror. C Oppola's version is not the strict Stoker adaptation that many had hoped for. but is a visual feast nonetheless. Oldman taps his own dark. sexy. stonny .self to create a powerful but sympathetic monster. while the rest of the cast range from the ineffectual to the overbearing. A rich and substantial vampire movie for our times. With Tim Pope's magnificent short. Phone. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I I Bronx tale (IS) (Robert De Niro. US. I993) Robert De Niro. Chazz Palminten’. Lillo Brancato. 124 mins. After witnessing a fatal shooting. a young boy is taken under the wing of a local hood; but this bad angel's influence is balanced with advice from his honest. hard- working father. A personal but nevertheless engaging film by the director of The Ail/rum: Central: MacRobert.

I Cape Fear (I8) (Martin Scorsese. IVS. I99I) Robert De Niro. Nick Nolte. Jessica Lange. Juliette Lewis. 127 mins. Scorsese's stunning remake of the I962 original leaves Si/r'nr'r' oft/re Lambs pallid by comparison. De Niro is terrifying as white trash psycho Max Cady. out of prison and stalking the family of the lawyer who suppressed evidence to put him away. Disturbing sexual undertones. centring on IS- year-old Danny (Lewis). make this an even more uncomfortable. but unmissable. top-notch scare- fest. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I Carlito’s Way ( I8) (Brian De Palma. L’S. I993) Al Pacino. Sean Penn. Penelope Ann Miller. I41 mins. ()ut ofjail after five years. former drug runner (‘arlito Brigante can't come to terms with the erosion of any sense of honour on the streets. and finds his struggle to go straight becoming more and more impossible. Pacino at times slips into performance rather than characterisation. but still squeezes sensitivity from the character; Sean Penn is excellent in his return to acting; and De Palrna pulls it all off with more restraint than usual. Glasgow: GFI‘. Edinburgh: UCI.

I Cinema Paradise: The Special Edition ( 15) (Giuseppe Tornatore. Italy/France. I988) Salvatore (‘ascio. Philippe Noiret. Jacques Perrin. I70 mins. The nostalgic chronicle of a Sicilian youngster's formative relationship with his local movie house and its wise old projectionist is largely unaltered; the new material details the Older Salvatore's traumatic return home. showing exactly what happened to his teenage pararnour. Consequently. the tone is darkened. a counterpoint to the central slushiness. A masterpiece restored. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I Cool Runnings (PG) (John Turteltaub. IFS. 1993) Doug Ii. Doug. Leon. John Candy. 99

mins. Speculative comedy based on the first-ever

Jamaican bobsled team at the last Winter Olympics is harrnlessly amiable. but unfortunately cranks up too many moralistic messages complete with appropriate accompanying music. Still. audiences seem to like its easy-going nature. making it an affectionate tribute to the late John Candy. Glasgow: ()dcon. MGM Parkhead. Iidinhurgh: ()deon. LJCI. Strathclyde: Cannon. l'Cls.

I Daens ( l5) (Stijn (‘oninx. Belgium. I993) Jan Decleir. Gerard Desarthe. Antje de Bocck. I34 mins. The economic success of a I9th century Belgian mill town has been won at the cost of appalling conditions for the workers. so socialist priest Adolf Daens sets out on a crusade and wins a seat in parliament. to the disgust of the Conservative Catholic Party. I Deadly Advice (I5) (Mandie Fletcher. UK. I994) Jane Horrocks. Imelda Staunton. Brenda Fricker. 9| mins. Treated like a child by her domineering mother. Jodie (Ilon'ocks) decides to ease her maternal burden with some handy tips from some famous (albeit deceased) murderers who act as her macabre guardian angels. A good idea that works better on paper than on screen. this first screenplay by Tuggurr creator Glenn Chandler has plenty of eccentric humour and British charm. but few outright laughs. All Odeons. All llCIs. Glasgow: MGM I’arkhead. I Demolition “81 (I5) (Marco Brarnbilla. US. I993) Sylvester Stallone. Wesley Snipes. Nigel Hawthorne. IIS mins. Cryogeriically frozen in I996. but thawed out for a parole hearing 30 years later. mass murderer Simon Phoenix (Snipes) escapes and sets about creating major mayhem. The only man who can stop him is Sgt John Spartan (Stallone). the man who caught him first time round and who is also undergoing the big freeze. Producer Joel Silver's trademark big bangs and some lampooning of screen images by the stars enliven this excellent sci-fi action movie that is laced with sharp social satire. Edinburgh: UCI.

I Do The Right Thing ( [8) (Spike Lee. IFS. I989) Spike Lee. Danny AieIIo. ()ssie Davis. John Turturro. I I9 mins. New York's deprived Bedford-Stuyvesant district on the hottest day of the summer. and racial tension escalates between Italian-American Sal (Aiello). his two sons and the mainly black local comrriunity who make up the bulk of his customers. I The Elephant Man ( I5) (David Lynch. US. I980) John Hurt. Anthony Ilopkins. Anne Bancroft. 125 mins. Moving story of real-life Victorian freak John Merrick. brilliantly played by Ilurt under a grotesque make-upjob. and his appalling mistreatment by society before he finally received the medical attention he deserved. I Fearless ( t5) (Peter Weir. t's. I993) Jeff Bridges. Isabella Rossellini. Rosie Perez. 122 mins. Convinced of his own immortality after surviving a horrendous plane crash. Max Klein's reaction to his near-death experience has a metaphysical bent reminiscent of director Peter Weir's early work. Bridges is magnificent as his character reassesses the details ofdaily living. bringing pain to his family and hope to fellow survivors. Edinburgh: IICI. Strathclyde: IFCI (Iydebank.

I Four Weddings And A Funeral ( IS) (Mike Newell. IEK. I993) Ilugh Grant. Andie MacDowelI. Kristin Scott Thomas. I I7 mins.
