Spielberg's magnificent movie and Neeson's perfonnance capture this enigmatic brand of heroism. while depicting traumatic events in documentary-like black-and-white images. In a parallel world. they try to rescue a princess from a lizard-like baddie. but our heroes are lost in over-designed sets and variable special effects. More holes than a drain-cover. In a reprogrammed role that says much about his changed image since the first movie. Arnie becomes the underdog fighting to protect mother and child from another more advanced cyborg. With an element of uncontrived human compassion lurking throughout the gloriously expensive action sequences. as Swarzenegger's cyborg develops human feelings. this is more than just a $100 million fairground ride. Young D'Artagnan (O'Donnell) teams up with a trio of the king‘s bodyguard and together they set out to foil the evil Cardinal Richelieu's plans. save the monarcy. snog the wenches. drink their fill and do what 17th century French heroes have to do. Unpretentious value-for-money entertainment that bears a passing resemblance to a novel by Alexandre Dumas. Edinburgh: UCl.

Not the most favourable portrait of the author of The li'usre/rmd. as the film centres on Eliot's role in the unnecessary committal of his wife in a mental asylum. However. the dialogue is stilted. the direction flat and the leads give uncharacteristically poor performances. One to avoid. See review. Possibly UCls.

Events before. during and after the legendary gunfight at the OK Corral with a reasonably big name cast depicting the actions of the Earp brothers. Doc Holliday et a1. Old-fashioned style western with familiar story and style places the emphasis on OK. Edinburgh: UCI.
I Tommy (18) (Ken Russell. UK. 1975) Roger Daltry. Ann-Margret. Oliver Reed. 108 mins. A gloriously over-the-top rendition of The Who's rock opera. with Daltry as the traumatised kid who comes out of his self-inflicted stupor to become a new messiah. Fuelled by a succession of rnarvellously unsubtle cameos from the likes of Elton John. Tina Turner and Keith Moon. The art direction. by John Clark. has richly stylised sets. Part of the Designs Of The Times season. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Toys (PG) (Barry Levinson. US. 1992) Robin Williams. Michael Gambon. Robin Wright. 121 mins. When their father dies. Leslie Zevo and his sister Alsatia are left his utopian toy factory. but their nasty uncle decides instead to tum out war toys: it‘s militaristic madness against childish lunacy. Nice sets but. wow. is this a piece of gross self-indulgence from Levinson who doesn‘t seem to know if this is a kids‘ film for adults or an adults' film for kids. Edinburgh: MGM.
I True Romance ( l8) (Tony Scott. US. l993) Christian Slater. Patricia Arquette. Dennis Hopper. 119 mins. Comic bookstore assistant Clarence meets. sleeps with and marries novice hooker Alabama within a matter of hours. then the lovebirds find themselves on the run with an accidentally stolen case of cocaine. Limelight- stealing cameos and writer Quentin Tarantino's verbal set-pieces fire this excellent movie. the epitome ofdisposable pop culture for the fast- food generation. Edinburgh: Cameo. I The Unbearable lightness of Being (18) (Philip Kaufman. US. 1987) Daniel Day-Lewis. Juliette Binoche. Lena Olin. 167 mins. Ambitious adaptation of Milan Kundera‘s complex novel about a wornanising Czech brain surgeon who falls in love for the first time with a doe-like small-town beauty at the time of the Russian invasion of 1968. A dawdling and rather austere narrative is given some spice and interest by an overwhelming eroticism. a beautifully judged evocation of Prague and gorgeous photography. With short (it‘s not the size that counts) Dick. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Unforgiven (15) (Clint Eastwood. US. 1992) Clint Eastwood. Gene Hackman. Morgan Freeman. 123 mins. Clint returns to the saddle as a former killer. tamed by his late wife. but pressed into joining a bounty hunt which takes him to the town of Big Whiskey and into the presence of its sadistic sheriff(Hackman). A darkly disturbing western which destroys the genre's traditional notions of clear-cut good and evil. instead presenting violent acts as physically and psychologically painful for victim and perpetrator alike. I Wayne's World 2 (PG) (Stephen Surjik. US. 1993) Mike Myers. Dana Carvey. Tia Carrere. 95 mins. It's time to party on again with Wayne and Garth. now they've left home and decide to stage Waynestock. a somewhat over-ambitious concert. in Aurora. More of the same. with a higher babe factor (Kim Basinger and Drew Barrymore in cameos). Garth discovering the love of a woman. and another nasty tum by Christopher Walken. Schwing-time once more. I White Angel (15) (Chris Jones. UK. 1993) Peter Firth. Harriet Robinson. Don Henderson. 92 mins. With a blonde-wigged woman killer on the loose. Ellen (Robinson) should think twice before renting a room out to lodger Leslie (Firth) - although she herself is a murder suspect. following the disappearance of her husband. Independently produced stab at commercial filmmaking by young Brits is competently shot and edited. but betrays a naively of narrative style. The serial killer theme merely recycles scraps from another table. See review. All L'Cls. I Wings Di Desire (15) (Wirn Wenders. W. Germany .1987) Bruno Ganz. Otto Sander. Solveig Dommartin. Peter Falk. 127 mins. Restless angel Ganz on duty over Berlin takes a tip from American movie star and former angel Falk on the possibilities ofcrossing over. and follows his mentor‘s path to consummate his relationship with beautiful circus acrobat Dommartin. Gorgeous black-and-white photography and a sensitive feel for the people and places of Berlin grace this thematically rich and uncharacteristically optimistic slice of Wenders enchantrnent. Highly recommended. With shorts My Baby Just Cares For Me and Night Visitors. Edinburgh: Cameo.
