FRIDAY 25

Edinburgh

I Dee Dee Bridgewater and Her Trio Queen’s Hall. Clerk Street. 668 2019. 8.30pm. £9.50. £7.50 (£5). The Memphis- bom. Paris-based singer makes a long overdue and highly recommended Scottish debut. courtesy of Assembly Direct‘s Silk Car City Jazz series. See preview.

SATURDAY 26

Glasgow

I Bill Wells Dctet The 13th Note. 80 Glassford Street. venue 553 1638; info 887 4733. 9.30pm. £4 (£3). Bill Wells is a fine composer and arranger of unpredictable and adventurous contemporary jazz charts. and has strengthened his band over the past couple of years. This version has Bill on bass guitar. with Robert Henderson (trumpet). Russell Cowieson (tenor sax). John Burgess (alto sax). Allon Beauvoisin (baritone sax). Nigel Clark (guitar). Lindsay Cooper (tuba and bass). and Ian Copeland (drums) (the band can also be heard in a late-night gig at the MacRobert Centre in Stirling on Fri 1. 10.30pm. with Kevin Mackenzie for Clark on guitar. and Tont Bancroft for Copeland on drums). With the Society of Musicians closing. however. and the Tron Theatre discontinuing Ziggy Zalman’s recent low- key Monday night promotions there. this venue is now Glasgow‘s only regular alternative to the pub circuit.

Edinburgh

I Icebreaker BBC Studios. Queen Street. 668 2019. 8pm. £6.50 (£4 on door). Originally formed in York. this unique fifteen-piece ensemble are now based in London. and explore the world of contemporary music as it exists in the work of composers like Louis Andriessen. Michael Nyman. Steve Martland and others whose priority is energy rather than more cerebral goals. Like the Cauld Blast Orchestra. they cross musical boundaries. and have an unusual instrumental combination which mixes ‘classical‘ strings and woodwind with saxophones. pan pipes and bass guitar. By no means a

SUNDAY 27 Q

Edinburgh

I Deborah Henson-Conant’s Jazz Suite Edinburgh Harp Festival. Queen‘s Hall. Clerk Street. 668 2019. 8pm. £8 (£6). The American jazz harpist is no stranger to this festival. and is always a welcome visitor. This time around. she has been commissioned to write a new 40-minute Jazz Suite for the unlikely combination of two harps (herself and Eluned Pierce). flute (David Nicholson). clarinet (Lewis Morrison). string quartet (drawn. like the wind players. from the Scottish Chamber Orchestra). and percussion (Davey Tulloch). It will doubtless reflect her characteristically bright. open harmonies. buoyant rhythms and eclectic mix ofjazz with influences from blues. flamenCo (which is the same thing. according to Miles Davis). Latin and African sources. I Sophie Bancroft and Gina Rae Edinburgh Folk Festival. Park Room. Teviot House. 226 5138. Midnight. £2.50. Although part of the Folk Festival programme. there is likely to be a strong jazz influence in the music of this vocal duo. although Sophie has been working in a more broadly-based pop and folk- flavoured vein of late. Broad-minded jazz fans may also like to note that the festival‘s final concert will feature composer Jim Sutherland's eclectic but decidedly jazz—influenced Somotherland at the Queen's Hall on Sun 3. along with Alasdair Fraser's more conventional folk group. See Folk Festival listings for details.

I Jazz Company Tron Jazz Cellar. Tron Tavern and Ceilidh House. Hunter Square (off High Street). 220 1550. 830—1 1pm. £3 (£2). The swinging and highly musical duo of Alex Yellowless on violin and Dougie Campbell on guitar dig into the Reinhardt-Grappelli repertoire.

WEDNESDAY 30

Edinburgh

I Gary Fimister ouartet Tron Jazz Cellar.

Tron Tavern and Ceilidh House. Hunter

Square (off High Street). 220 1550. 8.30—11pm.£3 (£2). The leader on bass and Dave Swanson on drums complete the line up.

performance in the second of two public concerts (the first features Finnish

classical bassist Jorma Katrama on Fri 1) in the second Scottish Bass Weekend. this time held in Glasgow. The great Dane. who is probably best known here for his work with his near-namesake Oscar Peterson. is one of the great mainstream players on acoustic bass in modern jazz. and has a monumental tone to go with his sharply-honed harmonic and rhythmic imagination. I ‘Snalte’ Davis and the Charmers The 13th Note. 80 Glassford Street. venue 553 1638; info 887 4733. 9.30pm. £5 (£3.50). Chances are that you have seen Brumrnie saxophonist Chris ‘Snake' Davis in one of his many telly slots. from The Paradise Club to The Jonathan Ross Show. We shouldn't hold working with the dreaded J.R. against him. though. and this rare visit fronting his own band. with Steve Walsh on keyboards and 1.].
