FILM INDEX
.BACARDI BLACK
US. 1993) Cary Elwes. Richard Lewis. Roger Recs. 104 mins. Two years too late. along comes Mel's version of the Sherwood legend. hobbling on its comedy zimmer-frame. The plot is what everyone expects. the gags are what no one deserves. Stuck for ideas of his own. the director can't even raise a smile ripping off others. Terrible. tenible. terrible. Edinburgh: UCI. Strathclyde: Magnum.
I The Secret Garden (U) (Agnieszka Holland. US. 1993) Kate Maberly. Maggie Smith. John Lynch. 102 mins. The unusual combination of the director of Europa Europa and the writer of Edward Scissor/lands conspires to create an authentic and affecting version of the children's classic novel. Shipped back from India. lonely orphan Mary makes friends with a local lad and her sickly cousin. exening a magical recuperative process on the latter and a hidden walled garden. Touching and uncontrived. Glasgow: MGM Parkhead.
I Silence OI The use: (18) (Jonathan Demme. US. 1991 ) Jodie Foster. Anthony Iiopkins. Scott Glenn. 119 mins. Following a series of horrific serial murders. imprisoned psychokiller Hopkins is released to help Foster and Glenn's FBI agents track down the culprit. Adapted from a novel by Thomas Manhunrer Ham's. Demme's film version is a subtle but scary suspense shocker. with two excellent perfonnances and great narrative drive. Glasgow: GFT. Fife: New Picture House.

e (PG) (Nora Ephron. US. 1993) Meg Ryan. Tom Hanks. 105 mins. One of the most warm-hearted romantic comedies to emerge from Hollywood in years. again proving the talent of Nora Ephron. who wrote When Harry Met Sally. Newspaper reporter Ryan hears a radio talk show which features recently widowed architect Hanks. She‘s sure they are made for each other. but the whole of the United States lies between them. Glasgow: Odeon. Strathclyde: UCls. I Der SM (Wolfgang Staudte. Germany. 1983) Klaus Maria Brandauer. Sigfrit Steiner. Gudrun Genest. 91 mins. S'audte's adaptation of Carl Stemheim‘s play satirises the hypocrisy of the German bourgeoisie through the study of a ruthless careen'st in Wilhelminian Germany before the First World War. while also revealing the selfishness that allowed fascism to prosper. Glasgow: Goethe-lnstitut. I StatTreit 3:TheSearch ForSooclt (PG) (Leonard Nimoy. US. 1984) William Shatner. DeForest Kelley. Leonard Nimoy. Dame Judith Anderson. 105 mins. Following the events of The Wrath 0f Kuhn. the Enterprise's crew scours a distant planet for Spock's body. A bit too rambling this one. though the Vulcan rejuvenation ceremony takes some beating for sheer campness. Edinburgh: Odeon. I Star Trek 4: The Voyage lloeie (PG) (Leonard Nimoy. US. 1986) William Shatner. DeForest Kelley. Leonard Nimoy. 119 mins. The crew of the Starship Enterprise beams down to 1986 San Francisco to protect the earth from an alien probe and save the whale into the bargain. As daft as it sounds. but essential viewing for corset and toupee aficionados. Edinburgh: Odeon. I Terminator 2: Day (15) (James Cameron. US. 1991) Arnold Swarzenegger. Linda Hamilton. Edward Furlong. Robert Patrick. 136 mins. The most expensive film ever made. In a reprogrammed role that says much about his changed image since the first movie. Amie becomes the underdog fighting to protect mother and child from another more advanced cyborg. With an element of uncontrived human compassion lurking throughout the gloriously expensive action sequences. as Swarzenegger‘s cyborg develops human feelings. this is more than just a $100 million fairground ride. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Thelma G Louise (15) (Ridley Scott. US. 1991) Susan Sarandon. Geena Davis. Harvey Keitel. Michael Madsen. 129 mins. The buddy/road movie genres are turned on their heads as Sarandon and Davis grasp the steering wheel and head off leaving a trail of murder and mayhem in their wake. On one level. the film is the critical catalyst that had the feminists
cheering and put the stars on the cover of Time magazine: just as importantly. it's an accessible piece of entertainment with excellent central performances. Glasgow: GFT. I This Boy's Lite (15) (Michael Caton-Jones. US. 1993) Robert De Niro. Ellen Barkin. Leonardo DiCaprio. 115 mins. The boy from Broxbum directs Hollywood superstars in Tobias Wolff 's autobiographical tale of growing up in 50s America with a violent stepfather. Young DiCaprio virtually acts De Niro off screen in this enjoyable. if a little predictable. coming-of—age tale. Glasgow: GFT. I The Three Musketeers (PG) (Stephen Herek. US. 1993) Chris O‘Donnell. Charlie Sheen. Kiefer Sutherland. Oliver Platt. 106 mins. Young D'Artagnan (O‘Donnell) teams up with a trio of the king's bodyguard and together they set out to foil the evil Cardinal Richelieu's plans. save the monarcy. snog the wenches. drink their fill and do what 17th century French heroes have to do. Unpretentious value-for-tnoney entertainment that bears a passing resemblance to a novel by Alexandre Dumas. See review. General release. I Thunderbirds Are Go (1)) (Gerry Anderson. UK. 1966) Scott. Virgil. Alan Brains. Lady Penelope et a1. 90mins. The first and wittiest of the Thunderbird spin-off movies. The 21st century version of the Shadows more than makes up for what is otherwise little more than the dragging out of one of the TV episodes. A must for all Gerry Anderson fans. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Tom and Jerry: The Movie (U) (Phil Roman. 3 US. 1992) With the voices of Richard Kind. Dana Hill. Charlotte Rae. 84 mins. That‘s right: ' ‘with the voices of'. The world‘s greatest cat and : mouse act not only talk. but sing and dance their 1 way through their first feature. as they cope with 3 leaving home and being out on the streets. It will divert the kids. certainly. but life-long fans will be disappointed to see (and hear) these cultural icons expand beyond sublime five-minute burst of mayhem. Glasgow: GFI‘. ' I Tombstone (15) (George P. Cosmatos. US. 1993) Kurt Russell. Val Kilmer. Sam Elliott. Bill Paxton. 129 mins. Events before. during and after the legendary gunfight at the OK Corral with a reasonably big name cast depicting the actions of the Earp brothers. Doc llolliday et a1. Old-fashioned style western with familiar story and style places the emphasis on OK. Glasgow: ODeon. MGM Parkhead. Edinburgh: Odeon. All UCIs. : I Top Gill (PG) (Tony Scott. US. 1986)'1’om Cruise. Kelly McGillis. Val Kilmer. 110 nrins. ' Say what you like about him. Scott undoubtedly has the golden touch at the box office. This emotionless fonnula adventure about men being grandly upstaged by very fast. very expensive and very dangerous aircraft. with the splendid Ms McGillis thrown for love interest. made a fortune. especially in the US. Edinburgh: MGM. I [hm llld Fumes Leid Disorder and Early Sorrow (Franz Seitz. Germany. 1976) Martin Held. Ruth Leuwerik. Sabine von Maydell. 86 mins. A faithful adaptation of Thomas Mann‘s semi-autobiographical novella which concentrates on private and political pressures in the family of a German historian. : Seitz adds documentary footage of the I920s. t some of which is assembled as if from the point i of view of the protagonist. to illuminate the political situation of the period. Glasgow: Goethe-Institut. i I Wayne‘s World 2 (PG) (Stephen Stirjlk. US. 1993) Mike Myers. Dana Carvey. Tia Carrere. 1 95 mins. It's time to party on again with Wayne and Garth. now they've left home and decide to stage Waynestock. a somewhat over-ambitious concert. in Aurora. More of the same. with a higher babe factor (Kim Basinger and Drew Barrymore in cameos). Garth discovering the love of a woman. and another nasty tttm by Christopher Walken. Schwing-time once more. General release. I The Wedding august (15) (Ang Lee. US/I‘aiwan. I993) Winston Chao. May Chin. i Sihung Lung. Ah-Lea Gua. 107 mins. The first British Technicolour , film is a melodrama centring on the s granddaughter of a gypsy woman trying to claim j her rightful inheritance from an aristocratic 1 family. Engaging and a little sentimental. but the . young Fonda cuts a dashing figure. Glasgow: GET.
