Squeezing shimmying dervishes through tight spaces may have been uppermost in the minds oi Billy lliltie and oavid Mackenzie when they named their dance label limbo (let’s not speculate what they were thinking oi when they called their commercial house label Stoatin’ - a name they can’t wait to discard now), but in the eighteen months they’ve been releasing records their modest operation in the back rooms oi dance specialist record shop 23rd Precinct has rapidly blossomed to encompass 25 releases and tour sister labels under the umbrella 23rd Precinct liecordings.
liiltie and Mackenzie took over 23rd Precinct, the shop, iour years ago, pushing it (successiully, it now transpires) into a more and more specialist vein oi record retailing. With their knowledge oi music distribution companies and contacts with Ms, 23rd Precinct, the label, seemed like the altruistic move. As though to demonstrate that dance

Despite immediate acknowledgement that 23rd, along with Soma, represents some sort oi Caledonian cutting edge, they’re still a low record sales short oi a chartbuster. liiltie’s long-tenn aim tor the company is to iind a crossover act - Cipsy’s re-release ‘Skinny Bumble Bee’ is getting Radio 1 recognition, but ltiltie tips oance United ior widespread appeal. In the meantime, the acclaim is nice.
‘lt’s the same production learns behind a lot oi the acts. The M involved give their own sounds to each project. Graham [orinnan] is involved with Cipsy, llavanna and Sublime and he can put a dliierent head on ior each act and give them dliierent ideas so it keeps them iresh.
