In a reprogrammed role that says much about his changed image since the ﬁrst movie. Arnie becomes the underdog ﬁghting to protect mother and child from another more advanced cyborg. With an element of uncontrived human compassion lurking throughout the gloriously expensive action sequences.

Scientists on an Antarctic research station thaw out an alien creature able to change its shape and horribly murder humans. Extraordinary effects in this tense shocker. which utilises the central gimmick from the original short story in a way the 1951 version did not. Edinburgh: Cameo.

An early Universal exploitation piece on white slavery. this was one of the ﬁrst movies longer than the one-reelers that marked the beginnings of cinema. An intriguing archive piece. shown as part of the History of the Cinema season and followed by a lecture. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

Comic bookstore assistant Clarence meets. sleeps with and marries novice hooker Alabama within a matter of hours. then the lovebirds ﬁnd themselves on the run with an accidentally stolen case of cocaine. Limelight- stealing cameos and writer Quentin 'I'arantino’s verbal set-pieces ﬁre this excellent movie. the epitome ofdisposable pop culture for the fast- food generation. Glasgow: Odeon. I Violent Cop (18) (Takeshi Kitano. Japan. 1989) ‘Beat' Takeshi Kitano. Maiko Kawakami. Makoto Ashigawa. 103 mins. Homicide detective Azuma has his own violently idiosyncratic methods of dealing with anyone from juvenile delinquents to gangland bosses. When a series of murders show a durgs link to the force. he becomes personally involved.

presented as inspiration for women trying to escape from domestic abuse. While suffering

from the usual short cuts and polishings as any biopic whose subject is still alive. it boasts two

magniﬁcent central performances from Bassett

I Wide Sargasso Sea (18) (John Duigan. Australia. 1992) Karina Lombard. Nathaniel Parker. Rachel Ward. 98 mins. The early life of the ﬁrst Mrs Rochester from Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. as imagined in the novel by Jean Rhys. was ﬁlled with a sensual magic. Btit John (The Year My Voice Broke) Duigan's ﬁlm loses the sense of dread that the descent into madness should hold. Lush photography. but not the storm of passion that was hoped for. I Withnail & I (15) (Bruce Robinson. UK. 1987) Paul McGann. Richard 13. Grant. Richard Grifﬁths. 107 mins. Two out-of-work actors surviving 1969 London giro squalor take a break in a picturesque Lake District cottage. where one of them suffers the attentions of the ageing homosexual owner. Reasonably entertaining British comedy with a tendency to rely on the all-too-easy targets ofdrug-taking and gay stereotyping for its humour. Edinburgh: Cameo. I The Wizard Ot OZ (PG) (Victor Fleming. US. 1939) Judy Garland. Frank Morgan. Ray Bolger. Ben Lahr. Jack Haley. Margaret Hamilton. Toto. 102 mins. Miserable Dorothy runs away from home but is soon whisked up into a magical land where her adventures teach her that happiness is to be found in her own back yard. Classic stuff indeed.just chockful of great songs. characierisation and memorably garish design. Perhaps marginally less enjoyable for the curmudgeonly element rooting for the Wicked Witch Of The West though. Edinburgh: I-‘ilmhouse.

I The Young Americans ( 18) (Danny Cannon. UK. 1993) Harvey Keitel. Craig Kelly. Iain Glen. 109 mins. At last. a British movie that is

brave enough to be openly commercial and play

directly to its young adult audience. Cannon‘s debut is a glossy. slick. in-your-face thriller. which brings US cop Keitel to London's nightclubs to investigate a series of drug-related murders. Plot gaps and dubious morals apart. it‘s just what the British ﬁlm industry needed.
