Different breeds developed over the years and the competitive element crept in. In the Borders there was so much rivalry that a meeting was called in Hawick in 1890 and the favourite bird named the Border Canary. Now the breed is the most popular in the world. and the Galashiels show the second largest in the UK.

Car buffs might have flocked to the london Motor Show, but its Scottish equivalent at the secc promises to be a full day out for all the family, not just those addicted to the adrenaline rush of acceleration. However, the speed merchants will not being ignored: the legendary Porsche 911 celebrates its 30th year with the Gerrara sitting alongside the 968 and 928 models, while Jaguar are displaying the new XJS 4.0

For £1, members of the public can get to experience every driver’s nightmare: being hit on the side by a truck driven at 35 mph.
‘The motor car is no longer a luxury, it is an essential tool,’ says Alister now, Chief Executive of the Scottish Motor Trade Association who are organising the ten-day event. However, he is acutely aware of the problems caused by over-use of the car, advocating the increased use of park- and-rlde schemes for cities. ‘I don’t think this Island of ours can stand the
