Amidst a gallery of Wellesian grotesques and expressionist camerawork the dialogue between truth and justice becomes progressively more garbled. Comic bookstore assistant Clarence meets. sleeps with and marries novice hooker Alabama within a matter of hours. then the lovebirds find themselves on the run with an accidentally stolen case of cocaine. Limelight- stealing canteos and writer Quentin Tarantino's verbal set-pieces fire this excellent movie. the epitome of disposable pop culture for the fast- food generation. General release.

Sur seems to have toned down much of his criticism of the Argentian regime. rendering it here as more of an ineffectual bureaucracy that hinders the voyage of a teenage student as he searches across Latin America for his father. Filled with interesting narrative asides and detours. this is a fascinating portrait of the state of an entire continent. Central: MacRobert.
I What's love Get To Do With It? (18) (Brian Gibson. US. 1993) Angela Bassett. Laurence Fishbume. 118 mins. The life of Tina Turner presented as inspiration for women trying to escape from domestic abuse. While suffering from the usual short cuts and polishings as any biopic whose subject is still alive. it boasts two magnificent central performances from Bassett and Fishbume. who brings the right level of seductive nastiness to lke. Songs and period detail are good. General release.
I Wide Sargasso Sea (18) (John Duigan. Australia. 1992) Karina Lombard. Nathaniel Parker. Rachel Ward. 98 mins. The early life of the first Mrs Rochester from Charlotte Bronte‘s Jane Eyre. as imagined in the novel by Jean Rhys. was filled with a sensual magic. But John (Tlte Year My Voice Broke) Duigan's film loses the sense of dread that the descent into madness should hold. Lush photography. but not the storm of passion that was hoped for. I The Witches (PG) (Nicholas Roeg. US. 1990) Anjelica Huston. Mai Zetterling. Rowan Atkinson. 92 mins. Nine year-old Luke is warned by his Norwegian granny about the everpresent threat posed by witches. which isn't much help because within the next half hour he stumbles on their annual convention in a small English hotel and gets himself changed into a mouse. A pleasing adaption of Roald Dahl‘s children's story has director Roeg (in unusually straightforward manner) creating a superior kids movie that has you rooting for the mice all the way.
