Jane Campion's masterpiece follows mute Scotswoman Ada (Hunter) as she travels to 19th century New Zealand with her piano and daughter to enter into an arranged marriage. Soon she begins a passionate and erotic affair with her illiterate neighbour as the means of regaining her treasured instrument. lmpeccable performances lift this highly charged piece to the realms of classic cinema. undoubtedly one of the best films of the 90s. I The Player (15) (Robert Altman. US. 1992) Tim Robbins. Greta Scacchi. Fred Ward. Peter Gallacher. 124 mins. Altman's satire on the wheeling and dealing of modern day Hollywood is more than just an excuse for cineastes to play trainspotter with the famous faces in cameo roles. It is also a terrific thriller about a studio exec receiving death threats from a spurned writer. Tim Robbins is magnificent in the lead role. while Altman manages to grin as he bites the hand that feeds him. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Raining StonestlS) (Ken Loach. UK. 1993) Bruce Jones. Julie Brown. Ricky Tomlinson. 90 mins. Another slice of real life from one of Britain‘s most dedicated filmmakers. An unemployed father brings terror to his household when he goes to a Ioanshark in order to pay for his daughter's first communion dress. Throughout. the northern community's sense of natural humour makes this a heartening. amusing and very accessible film indeed. Edinburgh: Cameo.

Zhang makes a departure from the opulent beauty of la Dou and Raise the Red Lantern with this documentary-ster tale of a shy. pregnant woman who refuses to accept the injustice dealt out to her husband. Again the role of women in society is highlighted and again Gong Li is superb as her resilience is pitted against the unfeeling authorities. A masterly performance. Central: MacRobert. .

Tsukamoto's latest post-modern body horror does have a plot - something to do with the murder of a child and the father‘s subsequent mutations through rage. However. it is the relentlessly violent imagery that most sticks in the mind. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

A young woman tries to isolate herself from friends and any notion of affection following the death of her composer husband and child in a car crash. but she cannot escape from the fragments of his unfinished composition. in which she played a major part. An expressive and symbolic film that is also emotionally satisfying. Binoche‘s award-winning performance. in a film of profound beauty. is the best of her career. See review. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I The Trial (12) (David Jones. UK. 1992) Kyle McLachlan. Jason Robards. Anthony Hopkins. 120 mins. This Pinter-scripted version of Kafka’s paranoid classic suffers from an inappropriately cast Kyle McLachlan and a feeling that the film as a whole hasn‘t escaped its BBC literary adaptation roots. That said. the Prague locations add authenticity and a cavalcade of British thesps deliver the goods in supporting roles. But it's just not Kafkaesque enough. Central: MacRobert.

A young Dutch woman on holiday with her boyfriend in France disappears inexplicably. and her panncr spends years of his life tracking her down. eventually to meet up with her mysterious abductor under the most nerve-shattering of circumstances. Meticulous in every department and with a truly chilling suprise ending. Sluzier's film not only boasts the last decade's most convincing movie villian but is invested with a very affecting undercurrent of emotional vulnerability. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
