Traditional Highland Games with all the expected heavy events including throwing. tossing and putting of hammers. cabers and shots. Also running and cycling track events. Highland dancing. piping and that ever important beer and whisky tent. No trade stands. just the essential food and drink stalls in this highly attractive setting.
I FARMING OF YESTERYEAR Scone Palace. Sun 12. 9.30am—5pm. Scone Palace. two miles North of Perth on the A93. £3 (OAP: £2. Kids £1 ). Annual show for the Scottish Vintage Tractor and Engine Club. The title says it all really. Besides the ancient machinery on static display there will be threshing. stooking and ploughing demonstrations on a field of oats and tattie hoiking demonstrations using both horse-drawn and vehicular equipment. With all the usual country fair stalls in evidence. this should make an interesting day out with the opportunity to visit the adjacent Scone Palace. Entry to the Palace is extra: £4 (OAP: £3.20. I HARVEST OF YESTERYEAR Almondvale. Sat l8/Sun 19. 10am—Spin. £1.50 (75p). Almond Valley Heritage Centre. Livingston Mill. 0506 414957. SMT bus 27 from the centre ofEdinburgh. lt's traditional harvest time at Almond Valley with the permanent collection of old working farm machinery being put through its paces on specially grown crops of oats. barley and potatoes. Although the mill is not yet at the stage where the barley can be processed right through to flour. freshly hoiked tatties will be on sale. Loads of family orientated entertainments will also be on offer. The centre is open daily throughout the year with its fine collection of old machinery on a sixteen-acre site which is said to ‘bring East Lothian‘s past to life‘. No voodoo we hope.

THE NORTH
I CIILLODEN BATTLE FIELD TOURS Sat ll/Sunl2. 12.30pm. 2.30pm. Culloden Visitor Centre. Culloden Moor. five miles east of lnverness on the B9006. Tel 0463 790607. £1.50 (80p). Members of the White Cockade Society go through their paces. leading tours of the battle field where. on 16 April 1746. the last major battle was fought on mainland Britain. The battle lasted 40 minutes and left Jacobite hopes crushed. The battlefield. restored to its original moorland state is open daily from 10am to 5pm.
I MOTORCYCLE CONVENTION Alford. Sun 12. l lam—4.45pm. Grampian Transport Museum. Alford. 28 miles West of Aberdeen on the A944. Tel 09755 62292. £2.50 (OAP: £1.50. Kids: £1). This is the North‘s largest bike event. with everything from giant six-cylinder Honda Goldwings. Harley Davidsons and Ducatis to Italian Motor Scooters and even a Sinclair like on show. Besides the ever popular Moped Marathon. a fund raiser for the SPARKS charity. and guest appearances from plenty of two-wheeled champions ofcircuit and road. there will be a marqueee of trade stands featuring everything from the latest machines to the most pointless accessory. The museum itself is open daily until the end of October. 10am—5pm (same prices). Besides the main exhibits of road vehicles there are video presentations and a Montier Dance Organ. which is demonstrated every half hour with a collection of tunes ranging from Colonel Bogey through Rock Around the Clock to the Cha Cha. Rave on.

Buildings as diverse as the south stand of Celtic Football Club (Sun 19. 1—4pm). the Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh (Sat 11. 10am—5pm) and the Megget Reservoir in the Borders (Sat 18. tours at 1 lam and 2pm. tel 0875 822409 to confirm) open their doors to the public. In all. over 300 buildings of architectural and historical importance as well as those simply having high entertainment value or intriguing working functions will be on view, with many taking the opportunity to put on special exhibitions and events to enhance the experience.

Although science has been taught and research undertaken at the University of Glasgow for over 500 years. and it is now the largest science-based university outside London. this year sees the centenary of the Faculty of Science. To mark the occasion. a whole range of lectures. discussions and exhibitions have been organised. These range from a special edition of University Challenge hosted by the one-and-only Bamber Gascoigne at Hutcheson‘s Hall. Merchant City (Wed 22. 5.30—8.30pm. £5/£4) to the chance to visit the museums of the departments of Anatomy and Zoology in the University (weekdays only. 9.30am—5pm. free). The ever popular Science Dome will be taking up residence in the East Quadrangle (daily. 10am—8pm, £1.20) with workshops. 60 hands-on exhibits and regular demonstrations by the Science Squad. There are special exhibitions and workshops to mark geology week at the Hunterian Museum. daily lectures at the Kelvin Lecture Theatre and the University’s observatory at the West of Scotland Science Park is open to the public.
