Lorna Simpson, the New York artist and photographer has, in her recent body oi work, Seli Possession, addressed the potent themes of gender and race in a wholly fresh and enigmatic way.
As a black iemale artist, Simpson resists the traditional temptation to employ accepted, social-documentary modes oi representation and instead uses highly personal, large-scale photographs with text, to explore how
. sexual and racial identity are loaned.
These photographs confound the audience by reiuslng to return the gaze of her pictured subject who she reiers to as Blackwoman. In so doing, the traditional genre oi the portrait is being subverted.
“The viewer wants so much to see a face, to read the look in the eyes, or the expression on the mouth,’ says Simpson. ‘I want viewers to realise that that is one oi the mechanisms which they use to read a photograph. Ii they think, “llow am I supposed to read this, it I don’t see the iace?”, they may realise that they are making a cultural reading that has been learned over the years, and then perhaps see that it is not a given.’
These are powerful images oi women, standing with their backs resolutelon the viewer and are almost mourniul In tone, alluding to memes oi mortality, tragedy, or In the case oi Landscape, Body Part 1 , memory. In this piece, the guarded ilgure combines with the potent sublectivity in the accompanying text which reads, ‘She passed a sign ior
Blackwoman by LornaSi-psen
Roscoe and remembered that’s what he called his dick,’ and creates an image oi extraordinary, evocative power.
The work oi Keith Whittle in the smaller Street Level gallery, does not oiier quite the same daunting challenge. Whittle’s Iloes Being In Style Really Matter is not so much a reilectlon on personal identity as a pondering on the merits oi man-made iibres. The series oi sculptured photographic pieces ionn a kind oi homage to viscose, cookery books, nylon, and bad-taste blouses. In other words a journey down the well trodden, kitsch path. (Caroline Ednie) Self Possession and Does Being in Style Ileally Matter are at the Street Level Gallery until 11 Sept.
