LACK re FRONT
They’re young, witty and black, but can you colour-code a comedy routine? Craig McLean checks out four American comics on this year’s Fringe.
nd next year it’ll be the midgets!’ We’ve had female funny, gay funny, transvestite funny, Jewish funny, unfunny funny. Stumpy funny can’t be too far off. But this year’s model comedy angle, this year’s hook to prick the interest and tout the tickets, is black funny. Shades OfHumour, or something, that’s what an all-black comedy show would be called in America. Here, there is no colour-coded punnery. Stand Up Black America is the name, telling it like it is. Fly the flag, flaunt the gimmick.
‘People will see that that’s the theme, but really we’re just three comics who have different slants on life. And some of it just happens to be based on us being black. But most of it is based on us being very funny human beings.’
