The world's greatest cat and mouse act not only talk. btrt sing and dance their way through their first feature. as they cope with leaving home and being out on the streets. It will diven the kids. certainly. but life-long fans will be disappointed to see (and hear) these cultural icons expand beyond sublime ﬁve-minute burst of mayhem. General release.

Amie plays a construction worker whose vacational fantasy is to pitch him into a netherworld of assassins and femmes [am/es before unleashing the full truth about his nightmares of life on Mars. The crazy Dutchman's Martian chronicle. teeming with sicko incident. is powered along by bursts of gee-ain‘t-this-fun-bnitality. but scores points for the playful ingenuity of the plotting. and Arnie looks like he's enjoying himself. I The Trial ( 12) (David Jones. UK. 1992) Kyle McLachlan. Jason Robards. Anthony Hopkins. 120 mins. This Pinter-scripted version of Kafka‘s paranoid classic suffers from an inappropriater cast Kyle McLachlan and a feeling that the ﬁlm as a whole hasn't escaped its BBC literary adaptation roots. That said. the Prague locations add authenticity and a cavalcade of British thesps deliver the goods in supporting roles. But it's just not Kafkaesque enough. Glasgow: GET. Edinburgh: Odeon.

I Turin PMS: Fire Walk With Me (18) (David Lynch. US. 1992) Sheryl Lee. Kyle McLachlan. Ray Wise. 135 mins. The move to the big screen to chronicle last seven days in the life of Laura Palmer allows Lynch to go to greater excesses than in the TV series. A dark-hued and disturbing miasma of small-town corruption and perversity. ﬁlled with Peakie faves and new cameos. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I Used People (12) (Beeban Kidron. US. 1992) Shirley MacLaine. Marcello Mastroianni. Jessica Tandy. 115 mins. A BBC schooling for director Kidron (Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit) has perhaps saved this amiable tale of quirky domesticity from becoming your usual sentimental slop. A widow is picked up at her hubby's funeral and begins a late late show romance. while around her disparate individuals go through the trials and tribulations of life. A bit of a grower. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I The Vanishing (15) (George Sluzier. Netherlands. 1988) Bernard Pierre Donnadieu. Gene Bervoets. Johanna Tcr Stecge. 106 mins. A young Dutch woman on holiday with her boyfriend in France disappears inexplicably. and her partner spends years of his life tracking her down. eventually to meet up with her mysterious abductor under the most nerve-shattering of circumstances. Meticulous in every department and with a truly chilling suprise ending. Sluzier's ﬁlm not r)nIy boasts the last decade's most convincing movie villian but is invested with a very affecting undercurrent of emotional vulnerability. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I The Vanishing (15) (George Sluizer. US. 1993) Jeff Bridges. Kiefer Sutherland. Nancy Travis. 110 mins. Throwing subsequent credibility out of the window. Dutch director Sluizer goes to Hollywood to remake his own classic. but agrees to a screenplay that removes all of the subtleties of his original chiller. Most of the story is the same. but one can only compare the disasterous American decisions with the elements that made them want to do it again in the ﬁrst place. Glasgow: Odeon. A11 UCls.
