couple of his mates come round. Sounds pretty deadly. but the viewer soon ﬁnds watching the artist at work utterly compelling. to the extent that the tiniest event becomes a crucial incident. I Reservoir Dogs(18) (Quentin Tarantino. US. 1992) Harvey Keitel. Tim Roth. Michael Madsen. 100 mins. A gang of hoods. known only to each other by colour-coded nicknames. meets at an abandoned warehouse to ﬁgure how out their rigorously planned heist went so drastically wrong. The best debut in years from writer-director Tarantino. whose stylish violence seduces the audience into complicity. Brilliant in every sense of the word. Edinburgh: Cameo. UCI. Strathclyde: UCl East Kilbride. I Rift-RafHIS) (Ken Loach. UK. 1991) Robert Carlyle. Emer McCourt. Ricky Tomlinson. Jimmy Coleman. 94 mins. A lighter-than-trsual investigation of British poverty from our foremost political director. written from ﬁrst- hand experience by fomier labourer Bill Jesse. Glaswegian-in-London Stevie (Carlyle) grinds out a meagre living on a building site and enters into a relationship with Susan (McCourt). who has musical aspirations. The jolly badinage of Stevie's co-workers (among them ex-Brookie Tomlinson) provides an enjoyably humorous backdrop. for which the Grim-Down-South message comes over all the more forcefully. Edinburgh: Cameo. I A River Rum M It (PG) (Robert Redford. US. 1992) Craig Sheffer. Brad Pitt. Tom Skerritt. 124 mins. A ﬁne. lyrical piece by director Redford describing the love and loyalty of two contrasting brothers in Montana early this century. Based on Norman Maclean‘s semi- autobiographical novel. it fuses the Scots Presbyterian lifestyle of American settlers with an true understanding of nature. Wonderful performances. beautiful photography: altogether a perfectly crafted ﬁlm about human relationships. Central: MacRobcrt. I Ito-per Ste-per (18) (Geoffrey Wright. Australia. 1991) Russell Crowe. Jacqueline McKenzie. Daniel Pollock. 89 mins. A group of Nazi skinheads in Melbourne ﬁnd their numbers dwindling when they get caught up in a street war with local Vietnamese. Hand-held camera shots draw the audience into the frenzy. letting them reject the skinheads‘ views with moral certainty rather than blind emotionalism. A ﬁlm that pressurises viewers into addressing the issues involved. Strathclyde: UCl East Kilbride. I Rosemary's Edy (18) (Roman Polanski. US. 1968) Mia Farrow. John Cassavetes. Ruth Gordon. 137 mins. In this fastidious. frightening adaptation of Ira Levin's novel. young housewife Farrow moves into a new apartment block where she comes to believe that her neighbours are witches and her husband is the Devil. Polanski works at the ambiguity factor all the way through by contrasting the everyday surroundings with the extraordinary events (imagined or otherwise) taking place in and around them. while the cast all play it with some conviction. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Son-entry (12) (Jon Amiel. US. 1993) Richard Gere. Jodie Foster. Bill Pullman. 114 mins. The plot of The Return of Martin Guerre goes wandering for a few years before emerging from the mists of the American Civil War in the shape of Jack Sommersby (Gere). who's not quite the man his wife (Foster) remembers. She's in love. but a court has to decide the genuineness of his claims. As effective as a thriller as the original but the central pairing lacks the spark that would really have set it on ﬁre. All UCls. I The Story of 011i Ju (12) (Zhang Yimou. China. 1992) Gong Li. Lei Lao Fheng. Ge Zhijun. 100 mins. Zhang makes a departure from the opulent beauty of In Dou and Raise the Red Lantern with this documentary-style tale of a shy. pregnant woman who refuses to accept the injustice dealt out to her husband. Again the role of women in society is highlighted and again Gong Li is superb as her resilience is pitted against the unfeeling authorities. A masterly performance. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Strictly Ballroom (PG) (Baz ~1-uhrmann. Australia. 1991) Paul Mercurio. Tara Morice. Bill Hunter. 94 mins. Dancefloor hopeful Scott Hastings incurs the wrath of the Australian Dance Federation by using his own steps in competition. loses his partner and his friends. but ﬁnds love and artistic integrity with the local wallflower. The ultimate feelgood movie. it is crammed with colour. glitter. music and spectacle. I Supervixensus) (Russ Meyer. US. 1975) Shari Eubank. Charles Pitts. Uschi Digard. 105 mins. Breasterama time with Russ the sexist. The plot concerns our hero's ﬂight from a

trumped up murder charge and his dalliance with many a substantially-nourished young lady on his way across country. Technically Meyer's an accomplished ﬁlmmaker and there‘s a lot of nifty cutting around. not all of it by the censor. Wonder how many folks go to Russ Meyer movies to watch the editing technique. Central: Allanpark.

I Three Ninja Kids (U) (Jon Turteltaub. US. 1993) Victor Wong. Michael Treanor. Chad Power. 84 mins. Three mini-martial artists use their grandfather's training to help their FBI agent dad nail a baddie. Sort of Home Alone meets the Turtles (minus the suits) as the youngsters in the audience cheer their on-scrcen heroes as they kick the poo-poo out of a startlingly inept adult world. General release.

I Tous les Marin: du Honda (12) (Alain Comeau. France. 1992) Gerard Depardieu. Guillaume Depardieu. Anne Brochet. 114 mins. The story of l7th century viol de ganiba virtuoso Marin Marais (told in flashback using Depardieu pere etﬂls) acts as a background for conflicts between music and musician. art and artiste. Hugely successful on home territory. it marks an impressive debut for young Guillaume. who‘s likely to set hearts racing from Toulouse to Tollcross. Fife: Adam Smith.

I Unforgiven (15) (Clint Eastwood. US. 1992) Clint Eastwood. Gene Hackman. Morgan Freeman. 123 mins. Clint returns to the saddle as a former killer. tamed by his late wife. but pressed intojoining a bounty hunt which takes him to the town of Big Whiskey and into the presence of its sadistic sheriff(11ackman). A darkly disturbing western which destroys the genre‘s traditional notions of clear-cut good and evil. instead presenting violent acts as physically and psychologically painful for victim and perpetrator alike. Edinburgh: Cameo. Filrnhonse. I Untamed Heart (15) (Tony Bill. US. 1993) Christian Slater. Marisa Tomei. Rosie Perez. 102 mins. Tomei and Perez were the ﬁnds of 1992. stealing My Cousin Vinny and White Men Can '1 Jump from under the noses of the stars. with Tomei going on to win an ()scar. Here. she is a waitress who falls for the dishwasher who suffers from a dodgy ticker. You'll laugh. you'll cry. you'll snuggle up together. Glasgow: MGM Sauchiehall Street. All UCls.

I Vacas (15) (Julio Medem. Spain. 1992) Emma Saurez. Camielo Gomez. Ana Torrent. 96 mins. Part historical epic. part surreal fantasy. part lyrical love story. Vacas ranges across three generations of Spanish history from the 1830s to the Civil War. using images of cows as visual metaphors for Spain itself. A mysterious. haunting and resonant ﬁlm that brings its own rewards. See review. Glasgow: GFI‘.

I The Vanishing (15) (George Sluizer. US. 1993) Jeff Bridges. Kiefer Sutherland. Nancy Travis. 110 mins. Throwing subsequent credibility out of the window. Dutch director Sluizer goes to Hollywood to remake his own classic. but agrees to a screenplay that removes all of the subtleties of his original chiller. Boyfriend searches for girlfriend who disappeared at shopping centre. only to come into contact with abductor - that much is the same. but one can only compare the disasterous American decisions with the elements that made them want to do it again in the first place. General release.

I La Vie Est Belle (PG) (Ngangura Mweze & Benoit Lamy. Zaire/Belgium/France. I987) Papa Wemba. Bibi Krubwa. 83 mins. Zairean star Wemba more or less plays himself in this high- spirited comedy that looks at an ambitious artist's game attempts to break into Kinshasa's music biz. Engaging frolics with a winning soundtrack: rather different in tone to the serious artistry of African ﬁlm-makers like ()trssama Sembene or Med Hondo. but the naivety and genuine charm are welcome all the same. Vixens ﬁlls a pivotal position in Meyer's career. when he graduated from fringe exploitation to . . . ehm. mainstream exploitation. (‘enttalz Allanpark.

I Xala (15) (Ousmane Sembene. Senegal. 1974) 123 mins. A landmark African satire on state independence. The ﬁrst African to be elected to the Chamber of Commerce. El Haji celebrates by marrying his third wife. but is hindered by a curse that has rendered him impotent. African Film Festival. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I In Bolto Joseph Nkiema and Colette Kabore move from their idyllic village home in Burkino Faso to the city of Ouagadougou where their new neighbours try to force them to sell off their land on the outskirts of town. Director Gaston Kabore demonstrates an assured grasp of the narrative in this ﬁercely polemical ﬁlm. which attacks both the enforced urbanisation of the island inhabitants and the government's censorship of the media.
