I the Godfather II (l8) (Francis Coppola. US. I974) Al Pacino. Robert De Niro. Robert Duvall. 200 mins. Still the only sequel to win the Oscar for Best Picture. Coppola's extended gangster epic looks at the life of the Corleone family before and after the events of the first movie. De Niro is superb as the young Vito. newly arrived from Sicily and making his mark in the Land ofthe Free; his son Michael (Pacino). now fully corrupted by absolute power. extends his crime empire. but at the expense of killing family and friends. Edinburgh: Cameo. I My (PC) (Harold Ramis. US. I993) Bill Murray. Andie MacDowell. Chris Elliot. TV weatherman Phil Conners (Murray) finds himself in the back of beyond. trapped in an ever-repeating single day. Partying and babe- chasing leads to serious romancing as he goes after his producer (MacDowell). Murray‘s cuddly sarcasm stops the movie from becoming the kind of moralising mush that surrounds so many of his contemporaries. At last. a Hollywood comedy that is really funny. General release. No. not the sad tale of some kid spending Saturday afternoons at the Ilope Street end of Brockville Park. but a curious coming-of—age tale from Tunisia. centring on a boy and his household servant. With Senegalese short Aida Souka. African Film Festival. Edinburgh: Filrnhouse. I The happiest Days of Your life (PG) (Frank Launder. UK. 1950) Alastair Sim. Margaret Rutherford. Joyce Grenfell. 81 mins. Inspired pairing of Sim and Rutherford in a classic British farce. revolving around a girls' school that is hilleted with a boys' school. Hilarious. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I II Bed With Madonna (18) (Alek Keshishian. US. l99l) Madonna. her dancers. the tour crew. a bottle of mineral water. 119 mins. This behind the scenes look at the world's top pop icon may not be the candid revelation the hype would have us believe. but newcomer Keshishian provides a constantly entertaining portrait of the artist. as she switches from super-bitch to mother mode. Concert footage of the Blond Ambition tour is impressive and tightly edited. but the highlights have to be Beatty and Costner making total nrats of themselves. Edinburgh: Cameo. I hidecent Proposal (15) (Adrian Lyne. US. 1993) Demi Moore. Robert Redford. Woody Harrelson. 117 mins. Suave bastard Redford offers poverty-stricken yuppies Moore and Harrelson a million dollars if he can sleep with the lady and dilemma ensues. Killer base material. but Lyne makes a towerineg abominable film out of it. Cavernoust empty stuff. a worse film than even The Bodyguard and likely to be every bit as successful. General release. I linemen (PG) (Joe Dante. US. 1987) Dennis Quaid. Meg Ryan. Martin Short. ll9 mins. Miniaturised and accidentally injected into Short's bum. maverick pilot Quaid has a mere twenty-four hours to alert the hapless victim to his presence. effect an escape and evade the wicked clutches of various industrial spies. Overplotted but engagineg ramshackle cartoonish adventure frolic. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Jack The Bear (PG) (Marshall Herskovitl. US. 1993) Danny DeVito. Robert J. Steinmiller Jnr. Miko Hughes. 98 mins. Set in the early l970s. this downbeat but appealing tale centres on a 12-year-old boy trying to come to terms with his mother‘s recent death and his father‘s blend of alcoholic mourning and working as host on a late-night horror show. The kids are refreshingly free from the sentimentality of other would-be weepies. and DeVito is given a bit more space to extend his range. Just manages to stay this side of the TV movie divide. Odeons: Glasgow. Edinburgh. Ayr. All UCls. I Juan. m (18) (Bigas Luna. Spain. 1992) Penelope Cruz. Anna Galiena. Javier Bardem. 94 mins. 'Jamon' equals ham; ‘una mulier jamona' equals hot hispanic babe. Put them together and you‘ve got this mix of reprehensible depravity and tease of social significance. As it tells of the desire of a pregnant woman for the bulgingly becrotched Manuel (with weightly subplots involving various mums). you can't help feeling it's aiming at too many targets. Sex. leering and exploitation. but not necessarily a fine film. See review. Glasgow: GF'T. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Jingle Book (U) (Wolfgang Reitherrnan. LS. 1967) With the voices of George Sanders. Louis Prima. 78 mins. Growing up in the jungle. young Mowgli learns from the animals around him. Enjoyable Disney. a long way after Kipling. but the songs are wonderful. General release. I Knife II The Water (15) (Roman Polanski. Poland. 1962) Leon Niemczyk. Jolanta Umecka. Zygmunt Malanowicz. 94 mins. Polanski came to prominence with this tight but imaginative three-character psychological study. A couple going on holiday pick up a hitch-hiker and soon dangerous emotional games are being played. The director's simple approach keeps the tension
high and melodrarnatics low. Glasgow: GFT.

I The Last of the Mohicans ( I 5) (Michael Mann. US. 1992) Daniel Day-Lewis. Madeleine Stowe. Russell Means. Steven Waddington. 122 mins. James Fenimore Cooper's tale of the English/French colonial wars in America becomes the most thrilling movie of the year in the hands of Mann (Manhunter) and a splendid cast. Day-Lewis makes a fine Ilawkeye. blending Native American and [European nobility to create a sympathetic. truly memorable hero. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Laurel and Hardy (U) A special programme. complete with piano accompaniment. to celebrate the anniversary of Stan Laurel's birthday. The shorts on offer include Finishing Touch. From Soup 7;; Nuts. You 're Darn Tootin' and Big Business. Glasgow: GET.
I Law of Desire (18) (Pedro Almodovar. Spain. 101 mins) Eusebio Poncela. Cannen Maura. Antonio Baderas. 101 mins. Notorious filmmaker Pablo moves through a decadent lifestyle of sensual pleasure. his only real concern for his transsexual brother-tumed-sister. However. when he falls for government minister's son Antonio. a nightmare of
manipulation and deceit is to follow. Flamboyant .
Spanish iconoclast Almodovar‘s exaggerated sexual farrago is interesting as a sort of overheated melodrama. though the lack of narrative control near the end does let the film down. Edinburgh: Cameo.

in which young Leon (Frankel) discovers that he’s not the Nice Jewish Boy he thought he was. but the result of a botched artificial insemination experiment. His real daddy is a Yorkshire pig breeder. Funny independent British movie from a determined cast and crew. which picked up
some decent festival awards last year. Fife: Adam Smith.
I The living End (18) (Gregg Araki. US. 1992) Craig Gilmore. Mike Dytri. Darcy Marta. 84 mins. Shy. sensitive Jon tests HIV positive and teams up with gun-toting Luke as they take a murderous flight across America. New Queer Cinema. playing out on the level of debate — should you respect a society that hates you? — but although there's a lot of anger on display. there's no clear idea how to direct it. A new low in spoofery which is a good deal less funny than the Lethal Weapon series it's supposed to be sending up. Sad. overstretched stuff with a welter of embarrassed looking guest stars. The veteran of French cinema's latest is a beautiful. entirely faithful. but slightly dull version of Flaubert's classic.
